Zoho Mail’s version of Gmail’s Undo Send

It is interesting to see, how Zoho counter back on some enhancement Google made on it services.

Recently, when Gmail introduced Undo Send last week, Zoho via sponsor post on Techmeme, introduced similar feature on Zoho Mail, called Outbook, which Zoho claim has been there quite sometime.

It work exactly the same way, except that Zoho Mail allow you to set how long(in minutes) you want the email to stay in outbox temporarily, before it sent to recipients. Google’s Undo Send at the other end, only hold the email for 5 seconds.

Zoho Mail also put an option, to send the email immediately. Head to Zoho Mail’s blog post for more details including how to set this up.

Backup Gmail and Hotmail on the cloud with Zoho Mail

Folks at Zoho has posted an instruction how to backup Gmail on Zoho Mail. The concept is similar to the client based applications such as Microsoft Outlook and Windows Live Mail, where the email downloaded into that particular email client.

In case this is the first time you heard of Zoho, it is an web office suite and collaboration tool, which among other contain Zoho Mail. It is email client that ‘live’ on the cloud. That means the backup emails are kept on the cloud, which theoretically safer rather than keeping it on the local drive.

Although the post specifically mention Gmail, it is actually works for any other email that support POP3, including Hotmail, that has just got their POP3 support recently.

To get started, head to your Zoho Mail and follow this - Setting - Mail Setting - Mail Accounts.

On my testing below, I used back the Hotmail’s POP3 setup.

zoho notebook New Zoho Notebook plugin, plus import Google Notebook data to Zoho

Few days after Google announce that no further development on Google Notebook, Zoho step up with the new Zoho Notebook plugin with lots more features. After installed the Zoho Notebook icon will appear at the right bottom of the status bar. I have hands on with it couple of time, and this is steps by steps how to use it. Make sure you have installed the plugin prior that.

Capture text

  • Close any Zoho Notebook opened on your web browser.
  • Hightlight the desired text , right click, anywhere on the browser, choose ‘Add to Zoho Notebook‘.

Snap images of the whole pages

Snap a region of images to Zoho Notebook

  • Open Zoho Notebook in any of your web browser.
  • Right click anywhere on your web browser, select ‘Snap Page to Zoho Notebook
  • 1 transparent square box will appear (the image beside) which can be re-sized or moved . To start snapping, move this transparent box to any image you want to snap, and double click.
  • 1 windows popped out asking the name of what this image will be saved. Click OK, and the image will be saved to Zoho Notebook.

Import Google Notebook to Zoho Notebook

To import data from Google Notebook to Zoho Notebook,  follow these steps taken from the zoho blog.

  • Install our new Zoho Notebook Plugin (the one I mentioned above) and restart your browser
  • Login to Zoho and Google Notebook
  • Go to this URL - chrome://zoho-notebook/content/g2z.html - and click on Start

Since it still in beta status, there are few bugs that might appear intermittently. This is what I discover..

  • Importing failed intermittently. On my case, I tried 3 times before its finally working.
  • When using  Snap Region feature, the transparent square can only be resized vertically or horizontally. Again it happens intermittently.

Beside that, for better user experience and convenient, capturing text or images should be work without needing to open/close Zoho Notebook in any browser. The Firefox plugin alone should be enough to handle this.

Anyway, it looks like Google Notebook’s browser extension still working.

Google Notebook is almost dead.

google notebook Google Notebook is almost dead.

It is quite disappointing when Google decided not to continue any further development on Google Notebook. After opened to the public almost a year ago, the end of the development has the deep meaning to the loyal users like me that using it extensively to take a quick note, clip notes and simple code for future reference

Although, the site and all data still accessible to all existing users, but the fact that ‘browser extension’ which is among the most useful features here no longer supported, means that Google Notebook is just like other online document,  in a sense how to keep the document (copy & paste).

It is unknown, how long Google will maintain the sites and data although I doubt it would be long enough. Since there is no longer further development, that could be the sign that Google Notebook is nearing its prime time.

Labnol provide few Google Notebook’s alternatives and how to move out the data to other services such as Evernote , and one commentator pointing to Diigo.  Beside that, you might as well looking at  Zoho Notes which  I blog briefly before.

By looking at the RSS chicklet, which shows the number of people subscribing to its blog, which stood at lowly3k, it is quite obvious that Google Notebook has not receivedrss notebook Google Notebook is almost dead. as much attention as other Google Services . And that could be the reason why Google decide to part with one of its technology.

Experimenting Zoho

So far, Google Doc is the only web office suite that I’ve used. I don’t like the idea of signing in to different websites. I prefer all in one suite such as Windows Live but with greater web experience.

Zoho is not a new name and is among the pioneers in office suite, and in fact the first that allows editing offline by utilizing Google Gear, even before Google doc used it on its Google Doc.

Zoho allows signing in using Google ID, and that is the reason why I really want to use it. And it offers more than what Google Doc has.

Borrowing Zoho’s sentence, Zoho is a collection of collaboration & productivity tools for personal and business purposes, applicable for everybody’s usage. Screen shot below is a part of what Zoho offers.
