Yahoo Mail open apps or simply called Yahoo Mail apps was introduced last year, but it never took off as expected. There are only 12 apps (including Yahoo feedback app) in Application Gallery as of today, which by standard of other app store(especially mobile), is disastrous end result.

It may not Yahoo ultimate goal to grows the number of apps, but merely to provide ‘average’ value-added service to it’s users beside the primary goal… email. Anyhow, these are some of Yahoo Mail apps that you may interested, out of 12 apps.

As an app, Paypal feature in Yahoo App is quite limited to Send Money and Request Money only. For both function, you’ll fill up all information requested while you still in Yahoo screen, but you still being directed to Paypal login page for sign in and completed the transaction. Anyway, I feel more secure this way, although I still prefer to accomplish everything directly in Paypal website.

Automatic Organizer or actually called Other Inbox is service that automatically grouped your email based on subject. Or here is how the define their own service

If you first time run the application, is will requesting for authorization, and once you did, it will scan through out your mail box. As it progress, it will display the number of your emails, and it’s summary. By the end of the process, your emails (not all) will be grouped into folders based on topic that Other Inbox determined based on it’s own algorithms.

Wordpress disappear from Opens Apps in Yahoo Mail

It is only this morning that I noticed Wordpress is no longer available from Open Apps section in Yahoo Mail when I tried to open it to make some demo to one of my friends. This is how it looks like last January.

yahoo app

yahoo app

Not a big deal though, as it is still available via My Yahoo! Just feel a little bit disappointed because it is no longer there. When Open Apps is opened to public in January 2009, it does look promising, at least to me. The idea to let you do everything from within Yahoo Mail is cool idea, but the end result is far from satisfying.

Only few applications were introduced in the span of 6 months, which is not acceptable. There are 9 applications in Yahoo Mail, while My Yahoo has better number, with 24 applications. Numbers of app and app type tend to be the factor that influence users to use any ecosystem. The obvious example is how super successful iPhone App Store is with tens of thousands applications.

Taking numbers as the benchmark here, Open Apps certainly has failed to impress users.

Yahoo redesign Image Search preview page

Yahoo update its image search preview page with new looks and adding more interesting features for greater viewing experience. Opening up Yahoo image search home, won’t show you any difference, but when you click any images to view it, the image will be open up on the newly redesign preview page, where the changes made.

The preview page is now divided to 2 sections. The top section , showing the image detail (size, source) that you clicked. Beside that image, there are other images in thumbnail size as well as back and forward button to scroll backward and forward all images result. The new design focus on convenient, where user longer needed to go back and forth, in order to view the rest of  the searched images.

And the bottom section, showing the website where that images are originated. If you familiar with Google image search, similar concept is applied here.

There is also search bar on top of the preview page. You can closed the first section to fully view the website, where the images comes from.

Yahoo rolled out Yahoo Mobile for web, iPhone and smartphones

Yahoo has making it presence known on CTIA 2009 with numbers of important products for it mobile division. Other than the introduction of Yahoo Messenger for iPhone, Yahoo also introduce its brand new mobile services called  Yahoo Mobile.

Yahoo Mobile was designed with everyone in mind, as there are 3 version available for web iPhone (not exist on previous version)and other smartphone. Yahoo Mobile was first announced to public last February.

As comparison, Yahoo’s previous mobile services, known as Yahoo One Search(which is now part of Yahoo Mobile) is accessible via m.yahoo.com .

Under the hood, there are 5 sections called Featured News, Yahoo News, My Interests, Connect and More Yahoo Service. The first 2 options are news from Yahoo News, which shows US and global news. It’s best if Yahoo could change this, to show the local news, which is more relevant to the user where this app installed.

On My Interest, this section allow you to choose what you like to do, and shown it here. You can add stuff that interest you most such as RSS feed of you favorite blog, bookmark, whether news, stock update and etc.

Over to Connect, which is the best part for me, it allow you to sign in and view your favorite email and social media updates. There are Yahoo Mail of course, Gmail, Delicious, MySpace, Yahoo Messenger and etc. More Yahoo services are available on the More section.

Overall, Yahoo Mobile is  feature rich application which provide greater experience to the users. Yahoo Mobile can be downloaded directly from  iPhone App Store.  1 thing to note is,  if your iPhone run on OS 2.1, somehow Yahoo Mobile will crash intermittently.

Some screen shots.

Stay here, Yahoo said when you search for Google, Ask and Live

As GoogleSystem pointed out that the new Google homepage will incorporate the Live Search and Yahoo Search button at the bottom of its own search button, which I think is a wise move to offer more competition, there is one message by Yahoo that I think is a brilliant move too.

If you perform search on keyword like Google, Live or Ask, Yahoo will put up special message that ‘advice’ you to stay there, and continues searching. The message is clear but honest and it doesn’t sound to offend other competitors.

Apparently search for Cuil doesn’t returning similar result. Probably Cuil is too early to be considered as serious competitor.
