WordPress Final Major Release Of the year : WordPress 2.9

In attempt not to make you feel ‘bored’ during long holiday season, here is the WordPress 2.9, freshly released by WordPress team yesterday.  To make your holiday even more ‘meaningful’,version 2.9.1 was released to fixed some issue soon after that. Isn’t that nice?

Among all feature loaded into WordPress 2.9, these might tempt you to upgrade right away!

  1. Global undo/”trash” feature, which means that if you accidentally delete a post or comment you can bring it back from the grave (i.e., the Trash). This also eliminates those annoying “are you sure” messages we used to have on every delete.
  2. Built-in image editor allows you to crop, edit, rotate, flip, and scale your images to show them who’s boss. This is the first wave of our many planned media-handling improvements.
  3. Batch plugin update and compatibility checking, which means you can update 10 plugins at once, versus having to do multiple clicks for each one, and we’re using the new compatibility data from the plugins directory to give you a better idea of whether your plugins are compatible with new releases of WordPress. This should take the fear and hassle out of upgrading.
  4. Easier video embeds that allow you to just paste a URL on its own line and have it magically turn it into the proper embed code, with Oembed support for YouTube, Daily Motion, Blip.tv, Flickr, Hulu, Viddler, Qik, Revision3, Scribd, Google Video, Photobucket, PollDaddy, and WordPress.tv (and more in the next release).

Embed Flash file using Kimili Flash Embed plugin

Yesterday, I was on the look out for Flash plugin to display flash movie or file in WordPress. After trying couple of plugins, I’m settled down with Kimili Flash Embed which best suits my needs. You can get it directly from WordPress plugin menu (WordPress 2.7 and above), or download it here.

What I like most about this plugin is, the existence of Flash button on the post page (like below),  to easily add any Flash file to the post.

Just like image and movie icon that work to insert image or movie into the post, the Kimili Flash Embed icon works to find the Flash file that you wish to be displayed on your WordPress post.

The selection menu shown below, allow you to choose the Flash file and modify other setting, which then generate the code right inside the post. The code can be used anywhere you want in your blog such as your theme, sidebar or widget.

Alternatively, you can directly add any Flash using this syntax below, provided that you have already uploaded the Flash file prior that.

This plugin offers a lot of flexibility in order to display the Flash movie as you wish. There are a lot of options to choose from, but don’t worry too much if you think that’s too much.  The default setup is working fine (in this blog). The only thing you need to change is the location of the Flash file.

Read the configuration menu to learn more what each setting means. You might want view also what attributes it has.

The outcome can be viewed on the left sidebar of this blog.

WordPress in iPhone version 1.21

Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /home/onlineje/public_html/blogjer/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-flickr-manager/FlickrManager.php on line 358

The first version of WordPress application in iPhone was released few months back, and a new version 1.2 has been released last week with more features that makes it appeal to the blogger who own iPhone. WordPress in iPhone can be used for self hosted WordPress blog, as well as WordPress.com blog.

Initially released as version 1.2, but due to bug on the photo functionally, immediate fix released and subsequently the app released as version 1.2.1. Having using and writing new post in WordPress for iPhone for few times, I can say that, it has all basic functionality, to write post in iPhone conveniently, without leaving the important things behind.

Writing and editing post is certainly its main feature. You can add link (hint: type ‘http‘ or ‘www‘) , and insert photos to the post. There is feature to preview the post that you write in iPhone as well. Beside post,  ‘page’ can be created here too. 1 thing to remember however, the posts or pages drafted in iPhone, will kept locally in iPhone.

You’ll be glad that moderating comments has been introduced is this version. It allow you to a mark it as spam, approve or unapproved as well as delete the comment. Hopefully, the next release will include functionality to reply the comments.

Here are some screen shots that I took from my test. Install WordPress in iPhone here or directly from the App Store in your iPhone.

Fix WordPress lighthouse Javascript bug on Safari 4

safari fixed Fix Wordpress lighthouse Javascript bug on Safari 4

I’d mentioned this bug when I use Safari 4 for the first time before. It is something to do with the lightbox javascript effect that cover the whole page and remain stuck there, when I tried to add URL.

It appear that, this is not Safari 4 bug, but related to the webkit that Safari 4 use. If you encounter this bug , please install the webkit by following these steps.

1. Download webkit (the version as of today: WebKit r41707) from webkit website.

2. Run ‘run-nightly-webkit‘ file until it stopped (with message ‘XXX files copied‘)

Thanks to Jonas, who point this out.

WordPress plugin: GooseGrade allows readers to correct your posts

My English is far from perfect. I can’t hardly write a post in less than 30 minutes. There are ‘holes’ here and there needs patch up. I still need someone to proof read my post, but due to the speed of writing I’m ‘in’ now, with 4-7 posts in a day, my proof reader (my wife) is lagging far behind.  So having stumbled this plugin yesterday,  I felt this is really what I need. grade this Wordpress plugin: GooseGrade allows readers to correct your posts

GooseGrade plugin allow readers to notify webmaster with any grammatical error, typo error, or other English-related error on your post. After plugin installated, there will be ‘Grade this‘ button  on each post. If readers notice any mistake on the post, to correct it, clicking this button will pop out a new windows, for editing purpose.

To correct it, highlight the incorrect sentence,  which will then automatically appear on that windows. Make correction and save it. Please note that , registration is required before readers be able to post any correction.

As for Webmaster, they can view the corrections on the blog’s dashboard. By approving the correction, the error part will be replaced , or there is also option to decline the suggested correction. Watch the video below to get to get better understanding how this plugin works.

While certainly, this is one such brilliant idea, but my concern is on the number of readers that willing to register in order to use this feature. Unless the reader is blogger too, that interested to with this plugin, I have feeling that, it is hard for normal visitors to register solely for the purpose of post any correction.

Fewer users will defeat the plugin’s main objective to let ‘readers to become citizen editors’. Allowing unregistered user will probably pose security threat to that blog as well as that plugin itself.  So the best way is, to integrate it with open id, facebook connect or Google Friend Connect , but I’m very well aware that, this means more works to be done.

Next time, if you come across any typo, grammatical error here, do let me know, okey.
