Having growing kid is one of the best things every parents ever had. Their curiosity toward something new is sometime beyond the control and covers everything they ever see. That’s include their interest toward technology and particularly internet. The internet which suppose to be a sea of information does have many things that suppose not to be seen by them at that age.
Youtube as one of the biggest entertainment and learning source in internet, has taken a step forward in protecting this young generation. The ‘Safety Mode’ unveiled by them is very useful to limit the videos that this kids can watch.
Turning on this function will block certain videos from being watched as well as exclude it from Youtube search function. ‘Safety Mode’ works with or without signing into your Youtube account. But signing into Youtube account give you further advantage as the Safety Mode will be locked from being turned off.
Youtube action is very much applauded, but this is just temporary solution. As the kids grows and become even clever, they will figure out how to overcome this ‘Safety Mode’.
Activating this function is very simple as demonstrated in video below.
First desktop, now Youtube goes offline. Youtube with number of Youtube channels unveiled program that allow users to download Youtube videos ‘legally’. It doesn’t come free though, where small fee required via Google Checkout.
A quick look on the mention partners no longer showing the purchase link (does it shows only to US visitors?) although you can see the screen shot here. Youtube, currently ranks 3rd on Alexa rank, is Google’s most prized asset and only ranks behind itself and Yahoo. Monetizing this traffic wasn’t easy , and this download program comes after Adsense for videos introduced last year.
Quick question popped out in my head.. Will this ‘pay-for-download’ works when Youtube videos can be downloaded using 3rd party tools (such as Real Player add-on plugin for Firefox) all this while? Perhaps not for fun, jokes or nonsense videos.
However, the are possibly market for peoples/organizations that looking to have the copyrighted videos legally. Apart from that, some of the initial channels joined this program comes from higher learning institution that provide lecturer and research videos.
The blog post announcing this plan received mixed response (more negative than the positive comments), although it is not fair to judge if this is not going to work based on that. But would you download something that you can get for free?
It seems like the departure of Jerry Yang, as well as the recession doesn’t stop Yahoo from rolling out another service.
Yahoo Glueaims to provide a new perspective of search to the users, where search result assembles variety of media types in a single page, not only text links.
A search on Jerry Yang, returned the wiki page, images, books, videos and surprisingly even Google Blog Search.
It is extremely useful if you’re looking for places. Search on Kuala Lumpur returns everything you need to know about it. Map, weather, photos, Hotel, news and etc
However, not all queries return results, such as Memey
Just like other community oriented portal, you can flag the content you feel is inappropriate.
Interestingly, you can sign up to be a Glue publisher, if you think your website’s content deserves to be here. Perhaps, that’s the answer why Google Blog search is there.
