Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) is set to launch its next-generation High Speed Broadband (HSBB) retail service on 24 March 2010 at a launch event cum celebration in Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur.
A simultaneous launch event will also be held at Menara TM in Bangsar, including a live crossover feed to an as-yet-undisclosed location in Sarawak.

A host of on-the-ground activities are being planned including technology showcases, games, contests and lucky draws. There will also be open air concerts by popular acts including Bunkface and Aizat leading up to the official launch later that evening. Both sets of audiences in Dataran Merdeka and Menara TM will be able to enjoy these concerts through video conference.

To mark the countdown to March 24 2010 in a grand manner, the entire Menara TM will be lit up every evening starting from 15 March 2010 with a graphical countdown projection beam depicting a countdown clock leading up to the gala launch date.

Signed in September 2008, the RM11.3 billion national HSBB project is a Public-Private-Partnership agreement between TM and the Government of Malaysia to develop next generation high speed broadband infrastructure and services for the nation. TM is putting up RM8.9 billion while the Government is contributing RM2.4 billion on an incurred claims basis based on project milestones reached by TM.

By the end of 2012 – in accordance with the completion of the first phase of the national HSBB project roll-out as agreed with the Government — approximately 1.3 million premises will have access to TM’s HSBB services. These nationwide areas — identified as Zone 1 (key economic areas) — include the Inner Klang Valley, Iskandar Malaysia, and key industrial sites around the nation.

The initial four areas that will be covered by TM HSBB services at the time of service launch will be Shah Alam, Subang Jaya, Taman Tun Dr Ismail and Bangsar. Some 300 users in those four areas are already participating in HSBB user trials currently and interested customers are welcome to pre-register on the TM website www.tm.com.my.

The user trials, which started in November 2009, have given TM the opportunity to test out its systems, processes, fibre installation methodology, etc. with an eye towards providing an enhanced customer service experience.

Dato’ Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa, Group Chief Executive Officer, TM, said, “I want to reassure all the interested early adopters out there that our HSBB packages will be of premium service, but not of premium pricing. After all, we want our service to be affordable and attractive enough to draw in as many early adopters in the four areas as we can; and we hope their positive experience will be an endorsement for the rest of the coverage areas when HSBB comes to their doorstep.”

TM’s total expenditure related to the HSBB project as of 31 December 2009 reached RM1.9 billion — covering last mile access, IP core deployment and capacity expansion for international links. Meanwhile, the total of approved claims from Government up to December 2009 stands at RM990 million.

In terms of premises passed, TM has exceeded its 2009 target of 150,000 by wiring up to 152,000 premises passed as at 31 December 2009.

TM’s next-generation HSBB services promises a richer, faster and more reliable online experience through faster network access speed (port speed) in excess of the current fastest available Broadband for the General Public (BBGP) speeds of 4Mbps offered by TM’s existing Streamyx service. HSBB also targets superior end-to-end network performance, including international bandwidth.

Do You Yemmz?

yemmz Do You Yemmz?

It is not everyday we can witness new social website emerged here in Malaysia, particularly from large company.   Yemmz, the new social website owned by TM is another attempt to build online social community, taking opportunity of our ‘craziness’ toward social networking. But how far can it go?

Yemmz itself is nothing new to some who follows the TM closely. It has been around since Nov last year based on some of early blog post that can be found from search engine. The news circulating on the net stating that it will be officially unveiled this March.

Over that past few years, TM has been busy rolling out it’s HSBB project, aim to upgrade broadband quality and service in Malaysia. Part of the project is also to develop and deliver contents to the end users, together with selected partners.

Yemmz could be a small part of the project that TM hopes to kick it off, along with major part of HSBB project, which is the broadband service itself. By positioning Yemmz as part of HSBB, Yemmz could gain some popularity from the publicity that HSBB earned when the project finally unveiled to the end users this year on certain areas.

Yemmz itself is just typical social networking website. If you familiar with Facebook or Friendster, you can master Yemmz in a day or shorter than that. At a glance, Yemzz seems to have all recipe it needs to success, except the sustainability . Trying to be different from established social networking websites, it does offer forum and marketplace which seems open to every members.

It is best to test it to it’s full extent to conclude if Yemmz is worthy option to established social websites.  One thing for sure, mammoth task is waiting the Yemmz team to grows this website bigger.

HSBB Wholesale For Service Providers

Last week, TM has briefed industry players on the the High Speed Broadband(HSBB)’s wholesale terms and condition, which if you understand like me as end user, means the project is near completion and now open for wholesale ‘booking’.

Due to the fact that HSBB is government backed project, all telco and Internet Service Provide (ISP) companies as well as other content providers, should be able to enjoy the potential and huge bandwidth this project is offering as long as it is benefited the users and country as a whole.

The opening of this service to major service providers is equally important to bring the same level of competition, which could possibly lead to innovation and competitively priced services along the highly efficient services.

The HSBB’s ITC document can be obtained from this page.

Among important points in the news release.

  • The HSBB-A wholesale ports are priced between RM52 to RM55 per port depending on volume and contract duration and calculated to boost the ecosystem of value added service providers riding on the HSBB network.
  • The ports are open to access seekers that plan to offer at least dual-play services (e.g. data and video) to consumers. This is to protect consumers from service providers that only plan to resell bandwidth at a higher price without adding value to the network.
  • HSBB wholesale access services will be opened to access seekers concurrently with the HSBB consumer retail service launch later this quarter, in March 2010 in the following four areas – Bangsar, Shah Alam, Subang Jaya and Taman Tun Dr Ismail.

TM BRIEFS INDUSTRY PLAYERS ON WHOLESALE HIGH SPEED BROADBAND ACCESS TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Over 100 industry players and potential value added partners briefed on HSBB port prices, availability and rollout progress
Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) is today briefing over 100 industry players cum potential value added service providers on its Wholesale High Speed Broadband Access (HSBB-A) Indicative Terms and Conditions (ITC). The ITC document was made available to the industry for perusal earlier this month

The HSBB-A wholesale ports are being favourably and competitively priced for all access seekers (between RM52 to RM55 per port depending on volume and contract duration) and calculated to boost the ecosystem of value added service providers riding on the HSBB network.

Availability to access seekers is on a first-come-first-served basis. The ports are open to access seekers that plan to offer at least dual-play services (e.g. data and video) to consumers. This is to protect consumers from service providers that only plan to resell bandwidth at a higher price without adding value to the network.

Datuk Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa, Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of TM, said: “We are keeping to our promise of a level playing field and Open Access to all qualified seekers, and I would like to take this opportunity to encourage all qualified SKMM-licensed access seekers and value added service providers to become our partners. This is just the beginning of the era for HSBB. I want to also reiterate that TM is focused on quality of service delivery at all levels.”

HSBB wholesale access services will be opened to access seekers concurrently with the HSBB consumer retail service launch later this quarter, in March 2010 in the following four areas – Bangsar, Shah Alam, Subang Jaya and Taman Tun Dr Ismail.

Value-added service providers interested in the HSBB wholesale services can begin negotiations with TM then, and can launch their services soon after. For now, access seekers can download the ITC from TM’s website at www.tm.com.my for reference.

HSBB is an Open Access network that promises a level playing field offering a new world of opportunities via dual and triple-play services for consumers which will be further enhanced as value-adding content and application third-party providers and partners roll out their services together with TM.

IPTV, Video-on-Demand (VoD), voice and high bandwidth data services will be part of all TM consumer retail services subscriber packages, and TM fully expects competition and participation from wholesale value added partners to add more variety and choice to Malaysian consumers.

HSBB is a national infrastructure platform that supports nation building due to its potential to raise K-economy online activities to the next level. TM is committed to make it open to all qualified players and intends to work together with access seekers to ensure premium quality to customers.

Insterested in HSBB? Register Now!

tm hsbb tweet Insterested in HSBB? Register Now!

The High Speed Broad Band or HSBB project is currently underway with numbers of pilot locations has started using this service since end of last year. The project which aimed to provide better and speedier broadband service to all users is now open for registration to interested parties as tweeted by TMCorp, TM’s official twitter account. The registration is open to residential as well as business.

This process remind me back on early 2000′s when Streamyx service is about getting its momentum.  If the area where you live is out of coverage or the new registration no longer accepted because of maximum users has been achieved on certain location, you’re then required to register online. The reason behind all of this is to ensure existing users able to enjoy the service as optimum as possible.

Once  minimum number of registration has been met , Streamyx will open so called new ‘point’ and registered users will have the privilege as the first to get the service . This cycle continue again until it is fully utilized. I’m not sure if the same ‘point’ concept still applied for Streamyx service nowadays , as the complaint about slow connectivity mounted over the time.

Citizen put high hope for HSBB to improve the broadband service, especially the speed which almost come to stagnant  for the past few years. Early users has experienced significant drop in speed over the years, compared with the good old days, especially during peak hours.

The increasing numbers of new user as indicated by latest internet penetration stat, doesn’t come with additional infrastructure by the service provider as perceived by most users. This is resulting more users getting frustrated with already congested network which is become common nowadays.

As an alternatives, more users has switched to wireless broadband run on technology such as Wimax, 3.5G and etc, but the service is limited to major city only and cost slightly higher. Wireless broadband do suffer from the same problem with its ‘big brother’, wired broadband, when the growth is exceeding the network capacity.

HSBB in long term could become one of the crucial factor that propel the new growth economy sector such as biometrics, R&D, ICT and etc to the new level. New technology always demand for speedier connection and consume huge amount of data, hence it is utmost priority to get HSBB works as expected in the first place.

To those who interested with HSBB, do check the service availability in your area or head to subscribe page in order to be among the first to enjoy this promising broadband.
