You’re too vulnerable to attack from harmful email via Facebook

Despite Facebook’s victory against spam, on which Facebook won lawsuit against Adam Guerbuez and Atlantis Blue Capital, which slapped with massive 800 millions charge, this doesn’t seem to send a tough ‘signal’ to them.

This nut is tough to be cracked right?

It was a ‘historic day’ yesterday, when I’m among the luckiest ones who received spam from them. It’s not me alone actually, but it seems that it spreads among the circle of friends in Facebook.

At a glance, this email looks legit. Yes it does, since this email was sent from legit Facebook email adress, and it was sent by your ‘friend’.

But the truth is, this is not something that they intend to do. The account is being manipulated by ‘unauthorized’ party to fool you and hence trick you to click on the harmful links. No clue how it was done, but it could be due to the carelessness of the users, when accepting/using certain applications that require you to agree on T&C (without reading any further) and then to notify all your friends. This is just my wild guess though.

But lucky me, Firefox prevents this page from being opened. I’m then certain on what is inside(something bad) but what will happen if I’m using Internet Explorer or Chrome, would it effectively kill this threat like Firefox??

It is quite troublesome to identify which one is legit or otherwise. You’re vulnerable to any attacks regardless how cautious you are.

In this case, keep yourself reminded not to open any Facebook requests sent via email. And, control which email you want to receive from the setting page.

9rules – overview and what it takes to join?

Honestly, I’ve never heard of 9rules until Cyperhack and Liewcf blogged about their acceptation into the 9rules. With such blogs uttering their excitement, I’m curious of what the heck 9rules is. So I gave them a visit. Bearing the slogan “The Best Content From The Independent Web”, are they living to what is expected?

Before that, let’s go the fundamental of 9rules which contains 9 rules (yeah as its name said), taken from its about page. Well, there is nothing new. You may have heard of it somewhere else. But while the rules look simple and sound familiar to the ears, how many of us are really practicing it on our real life… sad to say, neither is myself.

  1. Love what you do.
  2. Never stop learning.
  3. Form works with function.
  4. Simple is beautiful.
  5. Work hard, play hard.
  6. You get what you pay for.
  7. When you talk, we listen.
  8. Must constantly improve.
  9. Respect your inspiration.

At a glance

My first impression of 9rules is, it is one kind of blog aggregator (or collection of blog) of selected blogs which has ‘quality’ contents chosen by 9rules membership, regardless of how much the visitors are. When they’re talking about quality, the quantity of visitors does not matter, so does the pagerank or any other ranks.

It takes quite sometime for me to understand what 9rules is even though initially, there are few things that I’m still quite confuse even after reading their about page. This is resulted from the lack of definition on about page especially on past history of 9rules.

9rules has evolved 3 times since been rolled out 3 years ago

Ali (domain in 9rules.com) -> Ali2 (domain in 9rules.com) -> Existing 9rules + Chawlk (domain in chawlk.com)

9rules

9rules 9rules overview and what it takes to join?

Ali and Ali2 which are the first 2 versions of 9rules get and display contents from members and non members. This is totally different with the current version of 9rules, which has 100% content from its members only whom selected by 9rules membership.

There are 2 types of membership. Similar profile in 9rules can be used in Chawlk

  • Reader/Audience – You’re allowed to register at any time. From there you’ll be given a profile page where you can favorite your favorite post, view all related posts of your favorite post and etc
  • Member – This is for blog owners and which I intend to join on the next round. Once accepted, your content will be aggegated on 9rules. Readers can start to favorite your content. This is quite cool.

Chawlk

Chawlk is like a sibling of 9rules, but I’m not sure if it is pulling the content from 9rules. Here, you can signup using your 9rules credential. To me, Chawlk looks like a Digg type of website, where you can post links (called as clip) and discussions (called as notes) under categories below which are actually “subsites” of Chawlk. Chawlk will pull and display all contents submitted altogether.

How to join?

What’s special about 9rules is that, it has 24 hour submission process. This make 9rules exclusive. After that period, no more submission is accepted until the next round.

To stay relevant with it’s own rules above, it seems that it is quite tough for personal blogs or blogs with no niche to join 9rules. But anyway, you won’t know whether you’re going to be accepted if you don’t try, right? Mark this date in your calendar.

If you’re seriously considering to join 9ules, read and understand the basic principal behind it and make sure that you have the quality as well as originality. I myself has set my own sight to be in 9rules on a later stage, but still I’m gonna submit my application on the next round. But before that, help me fix the bug from the installation of WordPress 2.5.1;)

Little bit about statistics

My favorite part, it’s not a complete post without statistics right?

Chawlk is relatively a new website rolled out last January. It does not have as much visitors that 9rules is having at the moment. But Chawlk is showing a little sign of improvement (though no spike), while 9rules is going the other way round.

p/s; this is not a sponsored review or persuasive post to include blogjer in or whatsoever intention

On this page and on wikipedia have mentioned about Ali, Ali2 which are stated as the codenames for 9rules’s version. But it doesn’t mention what Ali and Ali2 is or where they are now. And then there is my.9r which is ‘friend and point area‘. Again there is no complete desription about it. And finally there is Chawlk, which I finally can see how it does look like. From this post, Chawlk is the new my.9r , which incorporates all functionality from there and relaunching it in a new website. So what’s left on 9rules??

Blame popular user when twitter is down

If you follow twitter closely, you might have noticed the service disruption couple of times. Based on the recent Q&A post on twitter dev blog, it was mentioned that the reason of this downtime is below.

charles asks if there’s anything users can do to lighten our load. The events that hit our system the hardest are generally when “popular” users – that is, users with large numbers of followers and people they’re following – perform a number of actions in rapid succession. This usually results in a number of big queries that pile up in our database(s). Not running scripts to follow thousands of users at a time would be a help, but that’s behavior we have to limit on our side.

Twitter is built on Ruby on Rails framework, and it seems that they have problem scaling twitter to cater for huge queries and mass users. But the down shouldn’t be that long.

twitter dev Blame popular user when twitter is down

On my past job, I was quite familiar with above mentioned problem, when the database starts utilizing huge number of resources (memory and CPU) but processes nothing (database locking and blocking). But most of the time the issue is resolved in a short period of time.

Perhaps this is what twitter lacking of right now.

Michael is confused as to why we don’t have “an army of geniuses working day and night”. We’d love to, but it’s easier said than done. We interview constantly and have a talented recruiter bringing us exceptional candidates daily. We’re careful about who we hire, though, because we’re trying to build a great team in a sustainable way. We’re currently exploring supplementing our team with consultants, and we’ve accepted strategic help from outside organizations who actually do have armies of geniuses. If you’d like to lend your genius to our particular problems, have a look at our jobs page.

police in facebook?

Apparently it is not only regular folks like us use Facebook. Do you know, that even police department has established their own group and developed Facebook application there.

I first came across about it when I stumbled upon news on how Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has created their own Facebook application for the purpose of combating crime. It’ll publish police news and at the same time to report appeal for information (through form) for any lead to unresolved crime.

Another police related Facebook application that I came across is, Toronto Police News release, which publishes police news around Toronto, Canada.

facebook vs crime police in facebook?

I have both Facebook applications installed in my Facebook to sneak in what is inside. Not bad, considering the high load task that policemen has, they have leveraged the latest craze on social media to spread their news and at the same time gathering back info from millions of Facebook’s users.

Other than that application, there are 7 police departments page available in Facebook, with the most fans to be Vancouver Police Department. However, it serves mostly for recruitment purpose and publishing police news.

There are a lot of groups and individuals in Facebook with the police on it’s name or profile, so it’s kinda hard to find the legitimate one.

This is the interesting part. How effective is crime prevention/investigation using Facebook? No one is sure about that, but I found one Facebook group called WANTED BY POLICE that has the group closed after the case is resolved. And there are articles on how Facebook solved crime (directly or indirectly) in Georgetown and London .

After all, this shows that social media website is not the only place to get socialized, get around with friends and have fun and etc. Depending on the creativity, there are a lot beneficial things that can be obtained there. My advice, use it wisely!

On unrelated development, GMP has its own channel on Youtube too. Their police department seems to be very active on social media. I’m wondering if our PDRM has the same intention too. And hopefully, it is not politically motivated.
