WordPress plugin: Canonical URL tag

Last week, Google, Yahoo and Microsoft has together introduced a new tag, called ‘Canonical‘  to help clearing duplicate URLs. What is Canonical Tag? The basic principal is to tell search engines, the preferred URL on your site, and telling them out of tonnes of URL pointing to certain web pages on your website, which URL should be indexed.

The tag should looks like this, installed on each of your web page’s <header> section.

<link rel=”canonical” href=”http://example.com/page.html”/>

I have to read the first post that I come across to, many times before I pretty much understand how it works and what for. I know it is going to be quite confusing initially. So you should read Joost De Valk’s post, how he illustrate this tag to his readers.

He in fact has created Canonical URL plugin for WordPress, Magento and Moveable as well, which will add the tag automatically at your <header> section.

If you still confuse, you might as well take a look at Matt Cutt’s presentation.

Yahoo YSlow 2.0 slideshow

About a year ago, I use YSlow for sometime to analyze my sites performance and other metrics that influence it. It will then suggesting what should be modified to improve it.

YSlow then grading sites based on the points accumulated from different factors. I still remember where Google and Yahoo graded ‘A’ with 99 and 90 points respectively.

So when I stumble about YSlow 2.0 slides today,  it remind me back of YSlow (first version) which only works on Firefox.

The slide filled with lots of technical stuff, but this is basically what YSlow 2.0 going to offered.

Pagerank update on 28th December – Do you notice or care??

Do you know there is another round of pagerank update recently??

If I understand correctly, Matt Cutt said on his blog (and twitter) that the last pagerank (although he say Google toolbar pagerank) update happens on 28th December 08.

Anybody notice drop or increase on their site’s pagerank?? Not even single of my sites got updated.

As of late, it seems like pagerank update has gotten lesser attention from webmasters including me.  Probably pagerank has lost it shine or interest among them, especially after Google drop bombs on sites selling links.

My personal take. I do care about it although the other side of me telling otherwise.

Beginner SEO guide – Learn from Google & SEO experts for free

Few weeks ago, I finished assisting a friend of mine setting up a new blog running on Wordpess. He was pretty much excited with the new blog. Just like any typical beginner bloggers (including me), he was ambitious to monetize his blog and earn income from there. Well, I said, go ahead.

A week later, he came back asking why he’s not getting a lot of visitors. So I told him the concept of indexing, SEO and webmaster tools such as Google Webmaster, Yahoo Site Explorer and Live Webmaster. He just nodded his head as usual. I thought it will stop there.

And then he came back again for another help, now he wanted to rank first on Google for certain ‘key phrase’ that his blog is focusing to. Now I almost fainted… lol.. actually  I’m chuckled.

Familiar with this type of people? I bet yes especially if you’re dealing with newbies. Not to turn him away, I ask him to do some homework.

To make the story short, I ask him to read Google’s SEO Started Guide. Sometimes, the best teacher is the inventor himself.

Apart from that,  Aaron Wall’s Blogger’s Guide to SEO is useful too. It’s among the first SEO guides that I read about 2 years ago, so this is a must. At the end of Aaron Wall’s guide above, he has generously put other SEO guide links that’s worth your reading too.

During my early days of doing this stuff, I’ve download a lot of tutorials and free e-book. After sorting out the best (not all),  I had put the collection of SEO tutorials & guides as well as the  keyword tool here, although I seldom use them nowadays.

These tutorials and guides only cover what SEO experts call on-site optimization, which is basically what we (as the website owners or also called webmasters) can control. Off site optimization is much harder (and important too) but that is on another post that I’ll cover for him later.

So before you shop for any SEO tutorials or ebooks, spend sometime googling it. Internet has whole lots of information. Happy SEOing your blog buddy.

I got juicy links

Stumble upon this when my adsense earning drop almost 60% this week, but I’m not sure if this is due to the known issue reported earlier or not, but it really make me a bit frustrated.

Well, I started checking my site’s indexed page and link when I found that one of my website is listed on SEOMoz’s Juicy Link Finder under certain keyword that I can’t tell . This tool is for premium members usage only, thus I can’t run any query using other keyword.

I’m not sure , juicy link finder’s search result should viewable by public ( I don’t see it blocked from being indexed on robots.txt or the meta tag) but Google has indexed this page, perhaps when one of the member doing search and then ‘share’ (see the screenshot) this report with others. I tried Googling other ‘Juicy Link’ with other keyword (plus operator and wildcard) with no luck.

If this is truly juicy link, this at least provide little joy to me, while I still figure it out the problem with my adsense. How about your adsense earning? Do you see any drop???

Btw, refine your search using this operators. You’ll enjoy the outcome
