Blackberry Webkit Browser Unveiled, Looks Promising

The most anticipated update on Blackberry’s web browser is finally revealed, when RIM announce new WebKit browser at MWC 2010. It is not secret that web browser is one of the worst part in Blackberry device, so this announcement is very much applauded by every Blackberry users.

With Webkit, which already powering almost all modern browser nowadays, RIM has come out with much better browser in terms of performance, feels that capable of rendering media such Javascript and Ajax more effectively. It is not complete a experience without watching the video, showcasing the capability or the new browser.  It is going to support HTML 5, CSS3 and DOMS L3 as well. It achieved perfect 100/100 scored in ACID3 test.

Although no date given when the browser will be released, this give hope to existing Blackberry users that RIM is not abandoning their effort to further improve web browser. When the data and statistic is showing that more users will access internet from smart phone, this is just emphasizing how web browser is becoming one of the crucial part that going to determine the future of smart phone.

BIS 3.0 Will Add 2 Way Email Status Sync?

The lack of 2 ways email status sync for email is quite disappointing after sometime . At the moment, only actions ( such as read, sent emails) from Blackberry device will sync toward the web based email (eg Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail), but not the other way round.

That’s pretty annoying if you have read hundreds of email from other email program (web browser, Gmail app in Andoird, iPhone), but have to  mark it as already read ,manually in Blackberry, just for example.

Some good news is, the rumors about upcoming BIS 3.0 is said to overcome this issue. But apparently that’s only for Gmail plugin, so I guess other email have to stick with 1 way sync until.. I have no idea when.

The original source where this info first leaked, has uploaded document BIS 3.0 which apparently has been taken down.

I certainly hope this is for real!

One of the sorely missed feature in Blackberry devices sold in Malaysia is the lack of Blackberry App World, an app store equivalent to the like of Apple App Store, Nokia Ovie Store or Android Market. Although there is workaround to install it which is very simple, the paid app is still not available for purchase and not every users have an initiative to install it.

So if that statement from Celcom during the launch of Blackberry Storms 9520 is to be believed, Blackberry users in Malaysia will soon have Blackberry App World available on the device by June. Obviously, this development should pleased majority of Blackberry users who still without access to Blackberry App World.

Although the statement came from Celcom, RIM (the maker of Blackberry) tend to introduce this service by country instead of based on carriers in the past. I believe that users from other carriers will be able to enjoy this service as well.

Beside the attraction to the device itself, having access to Blackberry App World which currently hold more than 10,000 application should be another point that users will consider when shopping for a brand new phone or switching from one smartphone platform to another. Without the apps, probably it’s not far too much to say that you have missed 50% the fun that the smartphone is offering.
