70 most popular blogs in Malaysia

I bet you have read it somewhere else. I even got to know about it via MohdIsmail. Syed Syahrul is presenting yet again 70 most popular blogs in Malaysia for 2008 (plus another 29 blogs as a bonus).

This year, he used Alexa rank as a method of building this list, instead of Tecnorati due to the reason he stated in the post. As expected, many bloggers claim that their blogs are not listed (as shown on the comment section) even though they has better rank. Well, keep in mind, that this is 70 most popular blogs. Popularity is subjective and it can be interpreted in any way the author desires.

At a glance, the list consist of blogs with variety of topics from technology, politic, fun, make money online, travel and etc. IMHO, The top 10 list is pretty accurate, except that it has missed out Raymond.cc, a popular tech blog. Anyway, I’m not in the list, but I’m thankful with it as I got to know ‘who’s who’ in Malaysian blog sphere. I applaud his effort of making this list which is not easy, and definitely requires a lot of resources.

Aside from this list, I came across Top 100 Australia blogs, a few days back. The major difference between these 2 lists is, instead of relying on 1 variable such as Alexa or Technorati, it calculates the ranking based on formula derived from few variables. While many still claim this to be inaccurate (there is no real formula to measure the popularity of millions websites around the world except perhaps only to 10 or top 100), but at least it has taken a measure of using more sources.

Few areas that need consideration:

  • This is gonna be popular later, so make this list permanent in 1 permanent URL, with past ranking archived
  • Update it more frequent (this is tough)
  • Use more variables such as mentioned above. It’s gonna make this list more accurate thus less argued. Yeah, everyone wants to be in the list.

Keep it up Syahrul
