Western Digital introduces 4th Generation WD Caviar Green Line of Products

Western Digital has unveiled the 4th Generation of WD Caviar green hard drives recently. The ‘green’ hard drives is offering lower power consumption but still with the mammoth storage size at 1.5TB and 2TB. Unboxing Western Digital My Book Essential 1TB

Western Digital My Book Essential 1TB external hard drive is our newest storage drive to keep up the ever growing need to store files and photos. After 1 year and half, the WD Element 160GB, purchased during Dec 2008 PC Fair, and the rest of internal hard drive on all notebooks are almost out of space.Thanks to movies and photos . We need 1 centralized storage to keep everything in order and get it stored safely as well.

Western Digital is again our preferred brand (fanboism ). Functionality, looks and value for money. Though it’s not the cheapest (but one of the cheapest) but combination of all factors above put in more weight in my decision.

Beside that, having the bold claim “World’s Best Selling External Hard Drives” printed outside of the packaging box does help My Book Essential stand out from the rest of the brand. Very persuasive marketing indeed.

Physical Design

Physically, My Book Essential is one of the gorgeous external hard drive that I have observed during the last PC fair. The tower form factor casing is perfect for limited workspace. Material wise, it is not the best, as I found better casing with grip and protection for minimal drop or fall.

Unlike other external hard drive which is pretty much looks dull in the dark, My Book Essential has front-facing LED that make it looks more elegance. Check out some unboxing photos that I have below.

It comes with standard accessories such as USB cable, AC adapter, power cable and manual. Thumbs up for the AC adapter which comes with different socket pin for other regional electricity source as well.

In action! Not a neat and tidy workspace though.

The rear view of WD My Essential. As you can see, there is power button here to conveniently switch it on and off without switching off the electricity source. There is also 1 USB mini port to connect it with computer, as well as kensington security slot.

The LED close up view. There are 3 type of LED indicator here, the bottom one is power indicator, right above it is lock/unlock indicator and the top LED is for storage level. Because the drive is still empty, the LED is turned off.

WD Smartware – Backup & Security

In addition to all physical feature it has, it also comes with WD’s own software called WD Smartware that provide more functionality and valued added service to you. Most important of all, WD Smartware allows you to secure your drive with password to prevent unauthorized access to the data.

Secondly, it has backup function that allow you to run full backup of your computer to this hardrive automatically. It can store backup from multiple computer with each backup stored with different profile independently.

Self Diagnostics

On top of that, there is self diagnostic tool to predict a potential drive failure.

How much?

The price is vary, in the range of RM315 to RM335, and yes I bought it for RM315 about 2 month ago.
