Jerry Yang, please loosen your grip on Yahoo

Before most part in Asean knows who McCain or Obama are, Jerry Yang has made his name all over the world, particularly because he is the co-founder of Yahoo, the world’s largest search engine… before Google made their debut in early 90′s. Back then, Yahoo is like Google today. At that time, where I access Internet is only through internet cafe, all was Yahoo,  the browser’s home was set to ‘Yahoo’, my email client was Yahoo, and of course my favourite chat tool was Yahoo Messenger (YM).

But the ‘honeymoon’ time is over. Since Google arose from nowhere, everything started to go wrong. The profit is declining, share market is shrinking, and even the employees are leaving, voluntarily or non-voluntarily. And yet, he is still reluctant to let go of the company he founded for a ‘very’ good price 6 months ago. Not blaming Google though, it’s just that Yahoo is lacking a ‘midas touch’ and creativity to turn the table back to its competitor.

Jerry Yang, the comeback CEO, succeeding Terry Semel, strongly oppose the Yahoo acquisition plan by Microsoft early this year. Unsurprisingly, the game changed recently after Google scrapped down advertising agreement with Yahoo. Adding the financial woes,  Yahoo shares plummeted 25% from its value 6 months back.

Realising the bad fate ahead, on web 2.0 event, he had openly invited Microsoft to buy Yahoo

“To this day, I have to say that the best thing for Microsoft to do is to buy Yahoo. I don’t think that is a bad idea at all…at the right price, whatever the price is, we are willing to sell the company,”

Like malay saying ‘ibarat menjilat air ludah sendiri‘ (eat back your own words), Jerry has openly ‘invited’ Microsoft to buy Yahoo. But, the there is no ‘love’ on Yahoo anymore for Microsoft. Steve Ballmer immediately shut the speculation down, saying no to Yahoo, even though still mentioned the cooperation on other matters are still possible.

Well Jerry, if I were you, I’d leave Yahoo to a better hand. I know that you’re a fighter, but stepping down won’t make you a looser. I’d rather be a fighter who lets the bunker stretch to another angle.

Personally, I’m still in love with Yahoo, who happened to be my very first email account I ever had and I’m still keeping it till this day. Nonetheless, I’m hoping that Yahoo can survive and march forward.

How to scan and repair corrupted Outlook files or .pst

When your Microsoft Outlook personal folder (known as .pst) grows bigger, it tends to load, synchronize, or even download emails pretty slow. If your system happens to shut off unexpectedly or crashed@hung (as we’re all familiar), the first thing that you want to know whether your emails are safe. It is like a warehouse where your work, contacts, deals, passwords, financial info and other valuable datas are kept. It is a nightmare that all users of email clients such as MS Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird want to get rid of.

Unfortunately, I’d just experienced the same thing over the weekend but I’m fortunate enough to be able to recover my personal folder data (.pst). My system has the tendency to crash quite often lately (perhaps due to overusage) and it has brought down my Outlook as well.

Usually, when my system backs up, most of the time I’m able to recover my Outlook back, by accepting the MSOutlook How to scan and repair corrupted Outlook files or .pstdefault prompt to repair the Outlook, or open it up on the Save Mode. But that day is not my day. My outlook just froze.

So be prepared, when your system crashes quite often, start performing back up on all your .pst and .ost files. Preventive is always better than cure. Don’t wait until your Outlook crashes. Luck may not be with you most of the time.

If your system has the symptoms that I mentioned above, start scanning and repairing your personal folder file (.pst) and offline folder file (.ost). To repair .pst file, use scanpst.exe, while scanost.exe is for .ost file. Both executable programs are available with your Outlook. Read More

Microsoft Live Search Toolbar on HP Consumer PC

MIcrosoft will start installing its Live Search Toolbar on all HP Consumer PC sold in North America and Canada starting next year. The default search engine will be set to Live search. Similar action has been taken by Microsoft when Live Search was the only and default search engine on IE 7, before Google opposing that setting back then.

MS Microsoft Live Search Toolbar on HP Consumer PC

It is unknown when worldwide HP shipment will have similar installation. From my point of view, this is a brilliant move by Microsoft since Google has partnered will Dell last year to offer similar thing.

Search Engine Land has detail breakdown the PC market share among the main PC makers by worldwide and North America, only where this deal is done.

While this is a good move to encourage more users using Live Search, but MS must improve its search quality in the first place. The default search engine can be modified with a few steps easily, so Microsoft wouldn’t want this to ruin their effort in catching up with Google, which costs them billions paid to HP.
