How to block ads in Internet Explorer 8

Ever since Firefox is prohibited in our office environment, I have to live with Internet Explorer (IE). Fine, but when I want to preview any blog post, it will shows the ads that I’m the publisher as well.  I’m not comfortable with that, worrying it will violate the ads service’s TOS (term of services) as well as losing revenue!

So the solution is to block the ads from appears on IE8. I came to right post directly, which save my time a lot. You have to basically download this XML file, the list of blocked ads. And then go into IE’s ‘Manage add-ons’ and choose ‘ In-Private Filtering’ and import the XML file over there. Lost?? Follow the steps by steps here. It really useful and the ads will gone in less than 30 seconds. Cheers!!

Yahoo Mail Web Slices in Yahoo Optimized Internet Explorer 8

One of the interesting features introduced in the new Internet Explore 8 is the web slices. Web slices allows you to keep update on your email, stocks or weather reports right from the Favorite Bar.

Yahoo Mail via the IE8 optimized for Yahoo has built the Yahoo Mail web slices functionality within the web browser itself. With Yahoo Mail web slices, any new emails coming into the mailbox can be viewed with a single click on the Yahoo Slices icon, without even leaving the page you’re currently in. List of emails will be displayed on top of that page. However to read the whole email, you’ll still need to go to the Yahoo Mail page.

Besides Yahoo Mail web slices, there are other web slices available on web slices gallery that you can try out.  But even that, the number of websites implementing web slices  is still small, but it might grow bigger, once the true potential of web slices are discovered in future, hopefully.

Meet the new Internet Explorer 8

Number 8 used to be popular number among Chinnesse (and even otherie8 Meet the new Internet Explorer 8races), because  of its relation with ‘luck’ .  So , will Internet Explorer 8 has that ‘luck’ this year?

In case you have not heard about this, the final piece of web browser from Microsoft, Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) is officially released and available for download started last night.

Microsoft touted IE8, as the best ever Internet Explorer version it ever developed. On the eve of the final release, Microsoft create a series of test to demo that it is, as fast as other browser.

IE8 also said to provide the best security protection as quoted by NSS Labs “NSS Labs indicates that Internet Explorer 8 blocks two to four times as many malicious sites as other browsers on the market today.”

In term of usability and productivity, Internet Explorer 8 comes with accelerator, web slices, visual search suggestion, private browsing, colour tab and etc.

But, off all these interesting features, Microsoft forgot, how the human being are, when a buggy message could kill all the curiosity an excitement toward it.

Even during installation, you’re already ‘hammered’ with the message requesting you to install an update. Why this message there? Potential bug to covered?  That update is for Vista!!

This remind me back of 1 tips that one of my guru said to me - ‘Target MSN/Live traffic (usually use Internet Explorer as default seach engine or ‘home’), because the users are either who’re  new to the technology or not technology savvy‘

Clearly, Internet Explorer 8 is for these peoples..

Internet Explorer 8 is as fast as its competing browsers

The common perception amont tech savvy users about about Internet Explorer perfomance is, it is slow especially running javascript page. We’ve seen numerous testing done before, by Internet Explore’s rivals or tech blog using standard methodology such as Acid 3 that shows, IE is slower than the rest of browsers.

Microsoft does not happy with this development and come out with its own testing version. It is simple test, run without using any standard tool. Microsoft paired Internet Explore 8, side by side with Firefox 3.05 and Chrome 1.0, to run top 25 websites in the world, to confirm which browser is the fastest to load these websites.

To measure the time accurately, timing started once Go button pressed, and stopped based on the browser ‘Done’ indicator, when the site completely loaded.

Internet Explorer 8 perform pretty well. It load faster on 5 of top 10, 12 of the top 25, 3 times as many as Firefox and 1/3 more than Chrome.

The result shown below, but you can also get the full report and videos.

This test brilliantly targetting common users, who are not familiar with sophiticated testing tool such ACID3. To most peoples, the fastest browser is the browser that load these websites in shortest time. And Internet Explorer has successfully proven that in this test.

Quite dissapointing, as there is no way to embed the video in this blog, hence I get couple of screen shots and pasted here. Click image to enlarge.
