Picasaweb 3 is out

Barely 2.5 months in Beta, Picasa 3 is officially released. There are bunches of new features and enhancement in the new release. For a start, you’ll be amazed with how Picasa automatically assembled photos, images and other media in your local hard drive.

To lite photo editors like me, the enhancement of red eye fixes which took only 2 steps is extremely easy, as well photo editing to remove minor blemishes and distraction from the photos.

There are also more ways to organize photos now. You can create photo collages, create wall paper, make video slide shows, short movies, video presentations and etc.

Sharing the photos ias  breeze. You can email, send to Youtube, or upload it to Picasaweb. There is alo ‘Sync’ function in which if enabled, will automatically sync photos in your computer to your Picasaweb account on the net seamlessly.

There is also screen capture function which save the screen shot automatically to your Picasa. Not that it can match to SnagIt, but it is better than to do it 2 steps in a traditional way (usual print screen).

More curious?? Head to picasa or watch video below for details.. Already familiar? Download it.

Jerry Yang, please loosen your grip on Yahoo

Before most part in Asean knows who McCain or Obama are, Jerry Yang has made his name all over the world, particularly because he is the co-founder of Yahoo, the world’s largest search engine… before Google made their debut in early 90′s. Back then, Yahoo is like Google today. At that time, where I access Internet is only through internet cafe, all was Yahoo,  the browser’s home was set to ‘Yahoo’, my email client was Yahoo, and of course my favourite chat tool was Yahoo Messenger (YM).

But the ‘honeymoon’ time is over. Since Google arose from nowhere, everything started to go wrong. The profit is declining, share market is shrinking, and even the employees are leaving, voluntarily or non-voluntarily. And yet, he is still reluctant to let go of the company he founded for a ‘very’ good price 6 months ago. Not blaming Google though, it’s just that Yahoo is lacking a ‘midas touch’ and creativity to turn the table back to its competitor.

Jerry Yang, the comeback CEO, succeeding Terry Semel, strongly oppose the Yahoo acquisition plan by Microsoft early this year. Unsurprisingly, the game changed recently after Google scrapped down advertising agreement with Yahoo. Adding the financial woes,  Yahoo shares plummeted 25% from its value 6 months back.

Realising the bad fate ahead, on web 2.0 event, he had openly invited Microsoft to buy Yahoo

“To this day, I have to say that the best thing for Microsoft to do is to buy Yahoo. I don’t think that is a bad idea at all…at the right price, whatever the price is, we are willing to sell the company,”

Like malay saying ‘ibarat menjilat air ludah sendiri‘ (eat back your own words), Jerry has openly ‘invited’ Microsoft to buy Yahoo. But, the there is no ‘love’ on Yahoo anymore for Microsoft. Steve Ballmer immediately shut the speculation down, saying no to Yahoo, even though still mentioned the cooperation on other matters are still possible.

Well Jerry, if I were you, I’d leave Yahoo to a better hand. I know that you’re a fighter, but stepping down won’t make you a looser. I’d rather be a fighter who lets the bunker stretch to another angle.

Personally, I’m still in love with Yahoo, who happened to be my very first email account I ever had and I’m still keeping it till this day. Nonetheless, I’m hoping that Yahoo can survive and march forward.

Register Google App and set your email client on Gmail

I initially documented these steps for a friend of mine, but I decided to put on a more detailed, together with the screen shot and to post on Blogjer.

If you’re already a Google App user, you should be very familiar with these steps. Anyway, for those who are new to Google App, it is a platform for building and hosting web applications on Google Web Servers
(definition from Wikipedia). Among the applications offered are Gmail, Good Doc, Google Sites and etc.

In Google App, I’m interested most with Gmail, whereby I can use Gmail as my blog’s email client, meaning that all emails sent to my blog’s email address are accessible from there. Or in other words, I’m able to  manage all my @blogjer.com email address in Gmail.

This is far more convenient, as compared to using default email client in CPanel, such as SquireMail. Furthermore, these emails are stored on Google Web Server, which is more reliable than our own web hosting server. I have now registered Google App account for my main websites. Here is how you can get started.

1. Head to Google App

2. Click sign up button such as below

3. By default, it will only show the trial version for Premier edition (not free). So click on ‘Standard Edition’ link (Free) to get free edition. But keep in mind that standard edition as it name says, has limited features as compared to Premier Edition.

12. Changing your email URL

The default email’s URL is not a beauty, you can customize it to be like ‘http://mail.yourwesbite.com’ . To achieve this, access the menu from service setting – email services. Click on ‘change URL’ and follow the instructions. Keep in mind that you must be able to modify your DNS setting. By default, this option is not available when you buy the domain, you have to register this add-on in which costs you USD1 annually (NetKL rate). That’s all, you’re done.

laterloop – bookmark your page and read them offline

I finally had the chance to test this social bookmarking tool, after it had stayed in my to do list for a while. In plain English, this is another bookmark tool, to bookmark your favorite page but with a few differences.

Laterloop is a combination of Firefox extension (there is also plugin for IE) as a bookmark tool, other Firefox extensions and Laterloop website as the place where the bookmarked pages are kept. You have 2 optionsscrapbook screenshot laterloop bookmark your page and read them offline

1. Saved the bookmark page in laterloop itself (i personally recommend this for few reasons later).

2. Save it locally with the combination of other Firefox extensions, called Scrapboo. It must be installed before it can be integrated with laterloop.

How to get started?

1. Sign up laterloop. Alternatively, use Google account if you have one

2. Download and install the Firefox extensionsave laterloop bookmark your page and read them offline

Ok, now you’re ready to begin using Laterloop. There are 5 options to start with

1. Click the LaterLoop icon at the right bottom edge of your browser

2. CTRL + SPACE (save)

3. CTRL + SPACE + SPACE (save & close the page)save link page laterloop bookmark your page and read them offline

4. Right click on any page or link to save the current page or the linked page . (Option 1- 4  save the page to laterloop)

5. Right click and save to your ScrapBook (see the first screen shot above)

There are few reasons why I recommend to save the bookmark online

1. You can archive, star or delete the bookmark

2. The most IMPORTANT thing, you can read them offline. Download your bookmark as ZIP file, and you get back bookmarked web page offline. Cool!! However, it is limited to 30 links only and no images included. So, when you open up the link offline, you can view the entire page exactly as online, except for the images

3. You can share your bookmarked link with public which will be published online under this URL – www.laterloop.com/links/your_id/

4. It’s accessible via mobile using smart phone such as iPhone, Blackberry and Nokia N60

laterloop small laterloop bookmark your page and read them offline

Laterloop provides new bookmarking experience and ease that I had never found before, but with 1 less thing. Socialize and community. Unless you publish them online, no one will find what you’ve bookmarked (unless you want to keep it personal) and whether search engines will  be indexing your published content. But after all, Laterloop is purely bookmarking tool (not social bookmarking tool) so do not expect to gain traffic if you ‘laterloop’ing your own page.

Laterloop is developed based on Google App Engine. Get more from application gallery
