Gmail in iPhone and Android get new engine, offline feature and UI enhancement

Google yesterday introduced new mobile browser version of Gmail, that said to be faster when user performs any action on iPhone or Android powered devices, such as reading or archiving email. The foundation behind all this speed is  HTML5 and Google Gears which is known,  for it effectiveness managing the web cache.Google Gears also will keep your devices connected even on the flaky connection.

Beside the speed, mobile web browser version of Gmail also received enhancement on how it make even easier now for any user to manage their inbox. Now there is floaty bar appears near the top of the screen. There are options such as to archive, delete, and more. The floaty bar stays with you when you scroll down or up your inbox. This is time saver as user no longer needed to scroll up or down to press such buttons in order to delete or archive any email,  which available only at the top and bottom of the screen.

Final improvement is on the Label functionality. Gmail bring the Gmail’s labellings for desktop functionality to the mobile version, which mean now, it is even easier to use and looks more familiar with it.

Offline version of Google Calendar available for all

After Google Calender on Google Aps goes offline last month, finally the offline version of Google Calender is made available for all users.

What you need to do to bring your Google Calendar offline:

To enable offline Calendar access, sign in to Google Calendar and look for the “Offline Beta” link in the upper right-hand corner of your account, next to your username. We’ve released this early and are still ironing out some kinks, so if you encounter any issues, be sure to let us know. If you access Calendar through the Premier or Education Editions of Google Apps, your domain administrator will first have to elect to turn on new features from the Domain Settings page of the Google Apps control panel.

Google Calander (only on Google Apps) goes offline

Users of Google Calendar in Google Apps can now bring their Google Calendar offline. But unlike Offline Gmail than run with half functionality (you can star, label, compose and reply email) even when they disconnected from internet (it will be sent later once connected), Offline Calendar only let you view the existing schedule and events, but not edit them.

To enable this feature, sign in to your Google Apps’s Calendar, and click the ‘Offline Beta‘ link available on the upper right-hand corner of your account (screen shot below)

The feature availability depend on the version you use. Google Apps Standard Edition (free version that I use) users  has this feature available immediately.

But Premier and Education Edition users has to wait the domain administrators to first check the box next to ‘Turn on new features‘ in the ‘Domain Settings‘ page of the Google Apps control panel before they can enable this option.

Unfortunately, this feature has yet available for ordinary Google account’s Calendar. Maybe soon??

Experimenting Zoho

So far, Google Doc is the only web office suite that I’ve used. I don’t like the idea of signing in to different websites. I prefer all in one suite such as Windows Live but with greater web experience.

Zoho is not a new name and is among the pioneers in office suite, and in fact the first that allows editing offline by utilizing Google Gear, even before Google doc used it on its Google Doc.

Zoho allows signing in using Google ID, and that is the reason why I really want to use it. And it offers more than what Google Doc has.

Borrowing Zoho’s sentence, Zoho is a collection of collaboration & productivity tools for personal and business purposes, applicable for everybody’s usage. Screen shot below is a part of what Zoho offers.
