Getting to know your Adsense data with Google Analytics

Knowing your highest Adsense earning posts in your website is no longer a mystery, if you have integrated your Adsense with Google Analytic  accounts. Why would you need to know that?

It is everyone’s dream to have big earning from Adsense. That’s when integrating Google Analytics into our Adsense comes to the picture, providing more statistical data about your Adsense income, to help you achieve that goal.

Google Analytics can only track Adsense for Content data, meaning that,  Adsense for Feeds, Adsense for Search, and Adsense for Domain  is not traceable. But that’s more than enough when Adsense for Content represents most of your Adsense earning.

What will you discover about your Adsense from Google Analytics?

Top Adsense Contents

This is the most important of all, you wanna know which contents generates income the most, right? Pretty straight forward, having identified these highly income contents, you can

  • Optimize that post (on-site optimization).
  • Identify the topic with most income based on the top content, and focus on that in your future posts.

To go into details, click on one of the content links . Clicks, revenue, CTR , eCPM and etc is what you really want to know about.

Filter the Contents

Back to the ‘Top Adsense Topic’ screen, use ‘Filter’ function (at the bottom of the screen) to analyze how certain keyphrases perform in your ads.  Keep in mind that filter looks for the content’s title only, not the whole content.

Filter is extremely a useful function, because it allows you to group posts with certain keyphrases together,  and how much it has generated income so far. This is one way to identify the topics that bring you earnings the most, besides the Top Adsense Content list. On the sample below,  I filter key-phrase ‘Celcom’ which generate $15.16.

Top Adsense Referrers

Besides knowing the top contents, knowing where it comes from is equally important. Although Google is dominant in internet world, you’ll be surprised on how other websites contribute significantly to the number of visitors that click ads on your websites.

This is more towards off site optimization. By identifying the websites that bring the visitors that click your ads, you can concentrate to that website, looking what visitors from there looking at your website. If it is search engines, optimize the SEO. If it is a forum, make sure you become an active member over there. These are just few examples that you can do if you know where they come from.

Back to the stats, by default, it will show you the ‘Adsense Revenue’ graph,  but if you click on the small arrow beside it, there are more graph options to choose, such as Adsense Ads Clicked and etc.  If you have Goal setup, it will be visible here as well.

Clicking on referral link will show you further details about it. In this example, I would like to know how Google Image Search (imgres) brings revenue to this website.

Adsense Trending -

This part lets you view the trend of Adsense in a variety of view. Adsense revenue is the default option, but you can choose other trends by clicking on the small arrow beside ‘Adsense Revenue’ button.

The only thing that Google Analytics isn’t willing to reveal to us is, what keywords that bring them to your content that leads to the click. That is the biggest secret that Google won’t reveal so that their Adsense and Adworks ecosystem will run well.

Integrating Google Analytics with Adsense lets you discover a lof of things from your Adsense, towards achieving greater result from your Adsense Ads. I myself, really appreciate information that I gain from Google Analytic.

Head to this post to learn how to integrate your Adsense with Google Analytics.

Google Analytics can tell you who’s visiting your site from iPhone

IPhone is so popular, even Google Analytics has included ‘visitors from iPhone’, as one of the filter on the Google Analytic’s Advance Segmentation.

advance segment Google Analytics can tell you whos visiting your site from iPhoneSo now you must be curious if you have visitors from iPhone.  But first, you need to set the filter.

To do this, access Advance Segment from any report page. At the right top of the screen, you’ll see option such as above. Click the button next to ‘Advenced Segments:’

Menu such as below will appear on the screen. Scroll down little bit, and there is the filter. Apply the filter and you’ll get the graph such as below.

I only have 1 visit from iPhone so far. That is predictable considering I don’t have tonnes of traffic, and iPhone is luxury item here.

So when Android, WinMo, Palm Pre, S60 filters will come out?

Google Analytics VS Statcounter

There are so many systems out there to analyze your website’s data, but it remains unknown on who provides the most accurate data. I’m too curious on how accurate is my Google Analytics and Statcounter data after Seolad made a comparison between Google Analytics, Awstat and Alexa statistics before. As pointed out by him, the different figures between them are mainly due to the different methods of data collection.

Google Analytics and Statcounter are both using Javascript, which is required to be installed on each of your web pages. From there the hit (page view, visit) will be calculated based on their own algorithm.

How I build the graph?

To have a better visibility and comparison of the data between these 2 main statistics, I have downloaded the data and build my own chart in Excel.

Steps taken to get more accurate data

Before that, to get a more accurate result, I have blocked any visits from my own IP (in certain range) from being counted. Furthermore, this is one of my websites that I rarely visit, just to be sure that I’ll get pretty much accurate stats. Apart from that, I set both Google Analytics and Statcounter to use similar Timezone, GMT + 8.

The comparison

The result is quite surprising. I’m under impression that they’ll likely have almost similar numbers, but I was totally wrong. The difference between them is quite huge. But if we notice, their graph pattern is almost similar. There are similar uptrend and downtrend of visitors and page views shown by both systems, indicating that they’re noticing of sudden spike but they’re differentiated by the calculation method.

Statcounter tracks more visits compared to Google Analytics. This is in contrast with the page views where Google Analytics tracks more pageviews than statcounter. Overall, Analytics has 5.57 page/visit while Statcounter has 3.96 page/visit.

analytics statcounter pageview Google Analytics VS Statcounter

My assumptions on why there are difference between these 2 stats

Algorithm – This should be the main reason why the stats is diffferent. Eg: In statcounter there is one field called Maximum Visit Length used to calculate your unique and returning visitors from a cookie. I accept the default value which is 30 minutes. The time period might be different in Google Analytics and there is no way to change it.

Intermittent network connection or hardware failure – Unless the server is totally down, some of the stats might be lost. But there are still possibilities of network connection failure causing this difference.

Visitors resetting the cookie – Since cookie is used to calculate this, resetting the cookies will provide a different number for sure.

My own visits – My IP address keeps on changing since it is located on DHCP. But it shouldn’t cause huge difference since I have set to block the IP within certain range. Apart from that, there might be a visit from site admin (such as my wife).

All the while, my favorite statistics is Stacounter even though it provides a limited log for free usage. I have written before on how to drill down your visitors and contents, which is one the funtion that I love, and is still lacking in Google Analytics. As of know, I still can’t answer which one is the most accurate, so the choice is yours.
