Creating tasks from within Gmail

Gmail team added new feature, called Task to ease keeping track of what you doing and your email.

To get started, it must first be added from setting page (more instruction). The usage is pretty simple, click on ‘Task‘ link which is available form the left menu bar, just below the ‘Contact’ page and a new Task windows will shows up.

Gmail stickers give away

It’s free and for all!! (while stock last). Another round of sticker giveaway after last year’s Adsense sticker give away. I know everyone excited to get themselves a copy, so to do so, send self-addressed envelop to address below but please read this guide carefully especially for non-US residents

Make sure to include enough postage to return a sticker pack via U.S. mail. It’s less than one ounce, so a standard $0.42 stamp will do if you’re in the United States; enclose an international reply coupon (IRC) if you’re outside of the U.S. And be sure to send your envelope in soon

Send me some Gmail stickers already
P.O. Box 391420
Mountain View, CA 94039-1420

During Adsense sticker give away, it needs you to put up US stamps which is not available anywhere at post offices in Malaysia. Now they need International Reply Coupon, I’m a bit wary if it is available here too.

Got for it if you think you’re sticker enthusiast

Gmail goes desktop

Got a hands on experience with Gmail gadget in Google Desktop after released a week ago. My impression is, this is a lite version of Gmail, accessible from your desktop with Google Desktop.

All basic email features are available (forward, reply, compose, except delete) as well as ‘star’ feature. Emails still can be viewed via ‘email thread’, but there is no ‘label’ feature available. Meaning that you can’t label emails and view all emails grouped by label.

Keep in mind that Google Desktop requires internet connection to work, so that your Gmail on desktop won’t be disconnected.

I still prefer using IMAP over this gadget, as I’m not a heavy Google Desktop user, and rarely got it switched on.

Register Google App and set your email client on Gmail

I initially documented these steps for a friend of mine, but I decided to put on a more detailed, together with the screen shot and to post on Blogjer.

If you’re already a Google App user, you should be very familiar with these steps. Anyway, for those who are new to Google App, it is a platform for building and hosting web applications on Google Web Servers
(definition from Wikipedia). Among the applications offered are Gmail, Good Doc, Google Sites and etc.

In Google App, I’m interested most with Gmail, whereby I can use Gmail as my blog’s email client, meaning that all emails sent to my blog’s email address are accessible from there. Or in other words, I’m able to  manage all my @blogjer.com email address in Gmail.

This is far more convenient, as compared to using default email client in CPanel, such as SquireMail. Furthermore, these emails are stored on Google Web Server, which is more reliable than our own web hosting server. I have now registered Google App account for my main websites. Here is how you can get started.

1. Head to Google App

2. Click sign up button such as below

3. By default, it will only show the trial version for Premier edition (not free). So click on ‘Standard Edition’ link (Free) to get free edition. But keep in mind that standard edition as it name says, has limited features as compared to Premier Edition.

12. Changing your email URL

The default email’s URL is not a beauty, you can customize it to be like ‘http://mail.yourwesbite.com’ . To achieve this, access the menu from service setting – email services. Click on ‘change URL’ and follow the instructions. Keep in mind that you must be able to modify your DNS setting. By default, this option is not available when you buy the domain, you have to register this add-on in which costs you USD1 annually (NetKL rate). That’s all, you’re done.

gmail slow

I couldn’t tell if it happened only to me or sporadically, but this is the first time I encountered such a problem. I first noticed it only on my Gmail. But apparently, other Google services such as Google reader is experiencing the same.

There are quite numbers of post with regard to gmail being slow, but I couldn’t find any articles or post, posted on the day I see this issue. That means, Gmail slow is something that’s not new, especially after Gmail 2.0 upgrade.

I was out of town last weekend and bringing along ‘not trustworthy Maxis 3G’ with hope to check email on the move. But gmail loading gmail slowunfortunately, most places that I visit has only GPRS connection. So my attempt to open gmail stucked half way at the loading page. So when I was back to my house and when I want to open up my Gmail.. what the heck.. it is this slow, even on broadband internet bandwidth. Could it be that  Google is memorizing how fast the last internet speed that I use, and try to adjust accordingly? But,  even HTML version does not load at all.

As usual, before I went to do something further, I cleared out my Firefox’s cache, closed it and and retried but with no luck. I used another notebook but ending up the same. It couldn’t be my internet connection, since ‘other than Google’ applications and websites were running fine.

I attempted to do this for about 30 minutes, before I gave up. I’m tired. I closed my notebook and grabbed my mobile in my last attempt to access Gmail thorugh mobile using WiFi connection. Amazingly, it loads the email as fast as usual.

I still couldn’t figure out if this happens on certain account only or if there is something going on at Google back end system. Anyway, it’s up back and running fine as usual, so I hope I won’t encounter similar issue again.

If issue persists, the last resort is to visit their help pages.

ps: do you know that in German, Gmail is known as Google Mail
