Flickr’s favourite cameras – How different focus on the same idea turns hit while the other turns otherwise

A day (or 2 if I follow GMT+8) after I posted about how I compare my choice of DSLR camera with what’s popular cameras in Flickr, CNET’s Stephen Shankland has came out with a post that’s based on the same idea. But the big different is (other than how big CNET is, compared to Blogjer) how he focuses his article on iPhone, which includes the catchy tittle.

As a result, he got 460++ ‘DIGG’ and more comments!! This is the classy example of how different focus on the same idea turns hit while the other not, which happens to be mine.

He is CNET’s writer who has vast amount of experience & knowledge in this industry, just take a look at the author’s box. Other than the good points that he brought in, he is definitely on a different league!

Anyway, I learned something valuable today. Time to work harder Zaki!

Ask Flickr : Which camera is the best??

Like Topo, I’m looking for an entry level DSLR camera as well. It’s been almost 3 years since my wife bought our first digital camera, Olympus Camedia C-60. We had soooo much sweet memories with it, such as our wedding ceremony and our little Luqman photos. As time goes by, there comes the need and desire for a new and better camera, nothing other than DSLR camera.

Looking for a value for money stuff, is normally not an easy task. I have what I want in mind, although not 100% sure yet. I’ve been reading numerous reviews on the net and asking from friends of mine about what’s good and hot at the moment, but let’s keep that aside at the moment.

Why don’t we take a look at a different angle? Just like taking photos, yeah!! Flickr, being the second largest online photo sharing site has 1 nice little feature that I’ve fortunately noticed about it today. It can detect what type of camera used to take the photos uploaded automatically.

So let’s take a look what’s most popular cameras in Flickr. Hope this helps!

The first graph below showing what is the most popular cameras in Flickr.No entry level DSLR camera ranked here. Notice Apple iPhone over there??

Now, let’s go a little bit closer. Choose 1 brand, for instance Canon, which is one of the brands in my shortlist. Again, not entry level camera listed here.

Beside the graph, it is also listing down all Canon cameras used in Flickr. This is the graph of Canon EOS 1000D. As you can see, the graph is increasing dramatically towards the end of year. This is expected since 1000D is only introduced on Jun 2008. Although it is relatively new camera, but has started to gain popularity among Flickr communities. Just some stats taken from Flickr

*  4,633 items uploaded yesterday
* 451 users yesterday
* Ranked 18 of 156 Canon Cameras

Conclusion

It is safe to assume that the graphs are only showing the popularity of these cameras on any certain period. So the trend keeps on changing everyday depending on how many photos are uploaded. But it should give you pretty good idea about how popular they are. Trends lasted for few months before a new comer comes in an conquer the market. Another thing is, only 2/3 photos uploaded are able to be detected by Flickr.

Yahoo Mail’s Open Applications hands-on

A day after requesting to have the beta access to Yahoo Mail’s open application, my wish was granted today. These application are only accessible via beta URL, but you won’t be able to see it unless you have been granted access prior that.

The first app that I open definitely WordPress. As my early guess, it wasn’t something that new. It allow you to post a new article to wordpress.com or your own hosted wordpress blog(require XMLRPC setup) as well as reading WordPress.com blogs.

Next to it is Flickr. It offer option whether you want Yahoo Mail accessing your Flickr account or not. By allowing Yahoo Mail talking to Flickr (yeah they share the same Yahoo ID),  you’ll be able to open and share your photostream, your friends photos or favourite photos to others via email. Not to worry, if you don’t have Flickr account, since you can still viewing and sharing public photos.

I did open other applications but not go through it very much, as I’m not really into is as often as WordPress & Flickr.

Third party applications

Will Yahoo bring Facebook, Myspace or even Twitter in? Probably..

My cent is, fully functional application is not required here. Personally ,if I want to browse Facebook, I prefer to open it on new browser.

But just like Flickr & WordPress, put the most frequently used functions such as ‘tweeting’ for Twitter or posting status update to Facebook is sufficient. Others have done it (even WordPress has such plugins), so to company like this size shouldn’t have no problem implement it if they wish (particularly twitter).

Yahoo own services

Beside these third party applications,  Yahoo should consider bring in its own application such as Yahoo Buzz, Yahoo Answer inside. Flickr is a good starter though.

Don’t forget the root..

But the ultimate goal of Yahoo Mail is to provide excellent experience when doing email related task, which I feel not really up to the level compared to previous Yahoo Mail. In my observation, the emails are taking longer time to load (although sometime it is erroring) with and without any applications opened.

This is quite irritating, when thinking of all these hypes about the new features, but the ‘foundation’ of Yahoo Email itself has started to shows its weeknesses.

Nevertheless, this is still in beta, and we’ll see how it perfoms once its open to every Yahoo users.
