facebook Facebook want you if you can solve their puzzle.

Tech company as big and as complicated as Facebook is not a surprise candidate to be among the companies admired by computer science & IT students grads or even the experienced worker.

Apart from its ‘glamor’ image, the compensation package for engineering related post it very attractive where 70k is very common. Top notch fresh grad from prestigious universities such as Standford or MIT are said to be paid up to 95K per year. This is a whole lot of money right, although in average, Facebook employees earn only 41K.

You know what this means? Facebook’s engineers can easily broke into the Forbes’s top 10 paying job in the US after working for few years!!

With much stake to offer, the entry path definitely not an easy one. Beside the normal hiring process, one way to be there is through the programming puzzle, The writer himself(who w solve 2 puzzles to get on board.

For fact, Facebook receive nearly 1,000 submissions a month. Out of that number, only 10% of submissions are fully correct, but only the best of the best get their chance for interviewed. In average, about 5% to 10% of Facebook new engineers are hired because of their puzzle submissions.

A golden opportunity that rarely to come, especially to highly skillful techies, whom without any formal certification or degrees. But the fact above reminds that the puzzle is not an easy task, and keep in mind Windows specific solution is not accepted. So forget about .net.

Embed your Facebook’s video into your website

In recent Video Just Got Better posted in Facebook blog, Facebook highlighted on how its video section is now supporting high quality videos & audios. That means users can now start to upload videos with such high quality. The only physical restriction is the video must be under 1024 MB and under 20 minutes.

It is mentioned there also that all videos uploaded previously will provide better viewing experience to all, apart from the high quality videos that users can now start to upload.

Another highlight is, you can now embed your videos in Facebook to any websites. I’m highlighting ‘your‘ because you’re only permitted to embed your own videos, unlike Youtube, which has no such restriction.

Performance wise, it is still lagging far behind Youtube, be it during uploading or playing the videos. I think that is the main reason, why it only allows user embedding their own videos at the moment.

The sluggish performance can turn users away unless those who wanted the videos accessible to all friends. I still prefer uploading videos from Youtube and then linked/shared the videos in my Facebook account.

Not an avid video user, this is my first video in Facebook for testing purpose. It is my cousin’s wedding. Play it and compare the results.

You’re too vulnerable to attack from harmful email via Facebook

Despite Facebook’s victory against spam, on which Facebook won lawsuit against Adam Guerbuez and Atlantis Blue Capital, which slapped with massive 800 millions charge, this doesn’t seem to send a tough ‘signal’ to them.

This nut is tough to be cracked right?

It was a ‘historic day’ yesterday, when I’m among the luckiest ones who received spam from them. It’s not me alone actually, but it seems that it spreads among the circle of friends in Facebook.

At a glance, this email looks legit. Yes it does, since this email was sent from legit Facebook email adress, and it was sent by your ‘friend’.

But the truth is, this is not something that they intend to do. The account is being manipulated by ‘unauthorized’ party to fool you and hence trick you to click on the harmful links. No clue how it was done, but it could be due to the carelessness of the users, when accepting/using certain applications that require you to agree on T&C (without reading any further) and then to notify all your friends. This is just my wild guess though.

But lucky me, Firefox prevents this page from being opened. I’m then certain on what is inside(something bad) but what will happen if I’m using Internet Explorer or Chrome, would it effectively kill this threat like Firefox??

It is quite troublesome to identify which one is legit or otherwise. You’re vulnerable to any attacks regardless how cautious you are.

In this case, keep yourself reminded not to open any Facebook requests sent via email. And, control which email you want to receive from the setting page.

Facebook & co can increase productivity?

Don’t be surprised if social networking websites such as Facebook is going to increase employee’s productivity in office rather than the other way round as what most of us is concerned. People calls it Web 2.0. Anything is possible!!

Britain’s Trades Union Congress (TUC)  issued an advice on not to ban the access to social networking websites such as Facebook. Employees should be allowed to access it but with proper policy in place with regard to the usage of such websites, which is known to pose security risk to the company as well as privacy concern if used in improper manner.

On another research by Pop Games it’s also found that 10 minutes break by browsing the internet can release stress and tension from their work, and in fact it can refresh your mind as well.

Similar views shared by Jeremy Burton, CEO of Serena software, an IT company based in the US. He created ‘Facebook Friday‘ where employees are allowed to browse Facebook on Friday for a few hours. While the outcome is not that obvious just yet, but it has resulted in more variety of small but useful pieces of software invented.

Based on these 3 articles, it should provide a ‘quite’ clear signal that social networking websites is not necessarily time waster. It might be the case if it is invented a few years back, when the only purpose of such website is solely for entertainment. But current generation of social networking website has more than that (yes, there is still lots of fun & entertainment there).

By forming intellectual communities, groups and event, and with Facebook’s wide accessibility, it can attract more users to join the team, rather than the traditional ways of doing that such as through forums, emails, word of mouth and etc

I’m pretty sure that traditional HR folks won’t agree with these articles. There is no way entertainment/socializing can turn on the productivity booster. With lack of knowledge about social websites and even web 2.0, it is understandably such stance still exist in most companies especially on developing countries where internet penetration is still lower.

On the other hand, I’m glad that since a few months back, our leadership team in the company where I work has allowed such websites to be accessed but with certain guidelines to be followed.

1 important point that I 100% agree is that, with current workload, one can simply feel the stress, and Facebook can cure that.
