Use Genius To Have Apple App Store Recommend Apps For You

With over 150k apps in Apple App Store, finding apps that suit your needs could sometime prove to be one tough task. Most of the time, we simply rely on Top App (free, paid or grossing), featured apps or just using search function to search for app.

But that’s not really helpful if you’re looking for apps that share similar purpose, let’s say education and learning apps that we’re currently shop for to fill up Luqman’s iPod Touch. Using search function or browsing the category is quite helpful, but have you tried Genius function? It is one function overlooked by many new app store user (including us, although we have been using Apps Store for one year plus).

Genius is one function under Featured tab, and the name implied it’s quite a genius feature. It comes very handy if you’re looking for related apps, or apps with the same functionality. So basically, Genius works by recommending apps, based on apps already installed in your iPod/iPhone.

But the suggestion, is not 100% accurate. For instance, how in the world did it suggest Dictionary app based on Ladybug Tree Shapes, shape learning games for kids? Something flawed in the algo?

Nevertheless, it is still one of the best ways looking for suitable apps, especially for new and not highly rated applications, which is still wonderfully useful.

Genius, can be accessed from under Featured tab. As Genius will access the information about your apps from iTunes, you need to accept Genius’s T&C before you can proceed and use this function.

Blackberry App World goes live but only open for limited countries

blackberry app world2 Blackberry App World goes live but only open for limited countries

The soon to be launched Blackberry Storm by Celcom and Maxis is surely to bring more customers to RIM. Adding more ‘fire’ to already ‘hot’ device is the fact that Blackberry App World has gone live last week [press release].

Although Blackberry device is not without applications , but the applications are scattering all over the web. This made it less interesting and time consuming finding application that suite the needs of Blackberry users, who are mostly business oriented peoples with busy schedule.

Having its own app store is definitely what Blackberry needed to boost its presence and better compete with the rest of players. It is time saver as well as providing convenient access for the device owner to buy and download the app directly from the device. The only downside is, the app is price from as low as RM2.99.

But wait, before you get too excited, for the time being, this app store is only open to US, Canada and UK folks. But stay tune, hope we don’t have to wait any longer.

Just when I thought I’ll settle down for iPhone for a while, I stumbled upon (I search if purposely actually…hehe) HTC Android G1 phone in Lelong, priced at RM1850. Yeah it is fully unlocked set. This video showing the seller playing around with Android phone and making a phone call to prove it works on Maxis or any carriers.

At a glance, it looks bulky. But I can forgive it since it from Google (lol). Overall is it tempting, but I wish to see these 2 things first before I go for it. I don’t really care the design, although next gen Android phone must be sleeker than this.

First is the multi-touch support. I still don’t understand why Google obey to Apple’s request not to implement multi-touch screen (there is hacked demo though). I know, it is patent thingy, but if you do it differently, does it still brake the rules?

Second, I love apps that ‘accompanying’ any smart phone. It makes them more entertaining, right? But Android app store with approx 800 applications, is relatively too small compared to Apple app store which has 20k apps.

Although Android app store is now opening its door for paid application,  we’ll see if it can boost the numbers of Android app.  To developers, are they willing to port their iPhone application to Android?  But I still love free stuff. Or make it lite version, and I’ll buy it if It is worth the penny.

Should I wait for the next gen Android phone?
