Seagate today announced their financial result for Q4FY2010 and which following key highlights:

For fiscal year ended July 2, 2010 Seagate reported 193.2 million disk drive unit shipments, revenue of US$11.4 billion, gross margin of 28.1%, net income of US$1.61 billion and diluted earnings per share of US$3.14.
For the quarter ended July 2, 2010, Seagate shipped 46.8 million disk drive units, chalked up revenue of US$2.66 billion, gross margin of 27.4%, net income of US$379 million and diluted earnings per share of US$0.76.
Seagate delivered record shipments, profitability and operating margin for fiscal year 2010 due to increase in global hard drive demand, which grew 22% year-over-year

Seagate Technology Reports Fiscal Fourth Quarter and

Year-end 2010 Financial Results

- Record fiscal year profit of $1.61 billion and earnings per share of $3.14
- Record fiscal year shipments of 193 million disk drives
- Record fourth quarter operating results

MALAYSIA, 22 July 2010 – Seagate Technology plc today reported financial results for the quarter ended July 2, 2010 of 46.8 million disk drive unit shipments, revenue of $2.66 billion, gross margin of 27.4%, net income of $379 million and diluted earnings per share of $0.76. The financial results for the quarter include $6 million of purchased intangibles amortization expense, $16 million of restructuring charges, $3 million expense (Other income/expense) for the May 2010 termination of Seagate’s revolving credit facility offset by a $6 million recovery of previously impaired long-lived assets and a $50 million income tax benefit due principally to valuation allowance adjustments related to deferred tax assets. The aggregate impact of these items was a $31 million increase to net income or approximately $0.06 per diluted share.

For the fiscal year ended July 2, 2010 the company reported 193.2 million disk drive unit shipments, revenue of $11.4 billion, gross margin of 28.1%, net income of $1.61 billion and diluted earnings per share of $3.14. The financial results for the fiscal year ended July 2, 2010 include $35 million of purchased intangibles amortization expense, $66 million of restructuring costs, $3 million expense (Other income/expense) related to the May 2010 termination of the revolving credit line, a net write down of long-lived assets of $57 million offset by a $50 million income tax benefit due principally to valuation allowance adjustments related to deferred tax assets. The aggregate impact of these items was a $111 million reduction of net income or approximately $0.22 per diluted share.

“I’m very encouraged by our financial and operational performance throughout fiscal 2010,” said Steve Luczo, Seagate chairman, president and CEO. “In fiscal year 2010 we delivered record shipments, profitability and operating margin. The company responded well to the increase in global hard drive demand, which grew 22% year-over-year, introduced key new products, continued to strengthen the capital structure, and remained focused on improving key business fundamentals to position Seagate for future growth.

“Specific to our fiscal fourth quarter, two of our key assumptions entering the quarter did not materialize as expected and impacted our financial results – macro-economic stability and pricing reflective of balanced supply and demand. Industry demand in the fiscal fourth quarter was at the low end of our expectations due primarily to issues emanating from the debt crisis in Europe and slowing consumer spending especially in the U.S. and Europe. The lower unit shipments and unfavorable pricing at some key capacity points impacted Seagate’s ability to deliver revenue and earnings for the quarter within our target range. Despite these factors, Seagate reported the highest operating results for a June quarter in the company’s history.”

All-Time Record Revenue Earnings Increase 78 Percent

CUPERTINO, California—July 20, 2010—Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2010 third quarter ended June 26, 2010. The Company posted record revenue of $15.7 billion and net quarterly profit of $3.25 billion, or $3.51 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $9.73 billion and net quarterly profit of $1.83 billion, or $2.01 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 39.1 percent compared to 40.9 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 52 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

Apple sold 3.47 million Macs during the quarter, representing a new quarterly record and a 33 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 8.4 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 61 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 9.41 million iPods during the quarter, representing an eight percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter. The Company began selling iPads during the quarter, with total sales of 3.27 million.

“It was a phenomenal quarter that exceeded our expectations all around, including the most successful product launch in Apple’s history with iPhone 4,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iPad is off to a terrific start, more people are buying Macs than ever before, and we have amazing new products still to come this year.”

“We’re really pleased to have generated over $4 billion of cash during the quarter,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO. “Looking ahead to the fourth fiscal quarter of 2010, we expect revenue of about $18 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share of about $3.44”

Avira Launch Avira Antivir 10 – AV10 in Malaysia

Haji Fadillah Yusof, Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, has just officiated at the Global Launch of Avira’s latest AV10 versions of its IT Security Solutions at 2.30pm yesterday, at the Concourse of Low Yat Plaza. Also present was Avira GmbH Founder and Global CEO, Tjark Auerbach.

With 2.3 millions user in Malaysia alone, Malaysia has the highest number of Avira Antivr user in Southeast Asia which has 10 millions user presently. Malaysia through Avira Sdn Bhd is also Avira’s Southeast Asia headquarter.

Avira to see 100% growth in consumers

KUALA LUMPUR, Mar 24, 2010: Avira Sdn Bhd, the Southeast Asia headquarters of German IT security solutions pioneer, Avira GmbH, expects 100% growth in the usage of its products in the region by the end of this year.

Its chief operating officer, Carol Lim, said her forecast is based on rising consumer confidence in the company’s Avira Antivir Personal freeware which currently has 2.3 million users in Malaysia and 10 million users in Southeast Asia.

She said Avira’s Southeast Asia operations is also expected to grow its consumer base to 20 million during the same period, thanks in part to the latest AV10 versions of its popular freeware, Avira Antivir Personal, and paid versions – Avira Antivir Premium and Avira Premium Security Suite.

These were launched here today by Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Haji Fadillah Yusof. Also present at the launch was Avira Southeast Asia CEO, Lim Kar Aik and Avira GmbH Founder and Global CEO, Tjark Auerbach.

“The IT security solutions market in Malaysia is currently worth more than RM250 million and growing due to ongoing threats of infection from viruses, worms, phishing, rootkits, adware, spyware and Trojans which spread through office networks, internet and even flash drives.

“Hence, it is imperative for antivirus solutions, including the basic freeware, to exceed expectations and meet consumer demands by catching most of these threats,” she said.

She was commenting on the fact that Avira products have been independently tested by AV- Comparatives to have the best scanning speed, detection rate and performance of any antivirus solution currently on the market.

Based in Innsbruck, Austria, AV-Comparatives is Non-Profit-Organisation and a leading global provider of independent anti-virus software test results.

Lim said whilst most IT security solutions provide a signature-based engine, and a heuristic engine which scans for the DNA of a particular threat, Avira’s premium products now offer an additional security feature called Avira AntiVir ProActiv.

“This Host-based Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS) works by monitoring the behaviour of computer systems in real time, detects a virus attack and blocks it instantly, thereby preventing any damage.

“Hence, Avira AntiVir ProActiv completes the existing signature-based, generic and heuristic detection processes by providing a third layer of advanced protection against unknown malware,” she said.

Additionally, among numerous other improvements, Avira has also included “time scheduling” to its Parental Control feature. This allows parents to set specific times on an hourly, daily, weekly or even monthly basis for children to surf the Internet, she said.

If you think your phone is meant for communication, entertainment or source of information only, you’re not 100% accurate just yet. Do you know that your phone can be used as law enforcement tool as well? Really? Sounds good! Yes, as long as your phone is equipped with camera, you can anytime become one of ‘traffic officer’ to help make our road safer.

This is how it works. Beginning last month, JPJ has openly called public to use their camera/camera phone to snap the photo of traffic offender anywhere in Malaysia. The traffic offender photos then can be sent to email address aduantrafik@jpj.gov.my and any action will be taken accordingly by them.

How will this help motorist to follow the traffic rules? The objective of this program is to create an awareness that, everyone is responsible of patrolling our road, not only police or JPJ officers. By then, motorists will keep this in mind that other motorists around them is watching them as well, or in other word, they can indirectly summon you if you break the rules. Do you think you would dare to cross the red traffic light if a policeman is riding beside you? The same concept applied here, everyone is a ‘policemen’ or ‘JPJ officer’ when they’re on the road.

It just a matter of time for BIS on other parts of the world will get upgraded. I hope it doesn’t take that long.

30000 Apps in Android Market, Zero In My Android Phone

Google looks very happy with Androids Market which is now the home to 30,000 something apps and it will continue to increase unstoppably. But Google forgot that, there are still lots of Android users without access to Android Market, from their very first Android Smartphone especially in SEA areas.

Except Singapore, Android phones shipped to countries such as Malaysia comes without Android Market by default. Instead, it was bundled with some lame app store that has very limited and outdated app. Most can only dream to have apps such Gesture Search that recently made its way to Android 1.6. Keep dream on guys!

Although Android can be rooted with custom made ROM , not everyone is willing to risk their almost 1.5K investment. Additionally, not every Android user is a geek, that has skills and knowledge to get that done.

I can’t understand why Android Market missed from phone shipped to certain countries, when others can have it.. Why can Apple or Nokia make their App Store and Ovie store available throughout the world without restriction? Is this something to do with regulations? Or it this because the phone manufacturer decides not to do so because Google says so?

I’ve grown frustrated with how Android phone is distributed here, not to Android itself. Waiting for HTC Magic which currently runs on Android 1.6 to get official upgrade to Android 2.0 at least, is another thing that keeps you awake in the middle of the night (just kidding). Until all issues with Android Market or Android OS upgrade being sort out with related parties, HTC Magic is gonna be the last Android phone I’ll ever have.

What Made Windows 7 To Start Fast?

Everyday, we rely on technology in many aspect of our life. That’s includes to get things done properly, entertaining us or even making us looks fair. It is not a secret that we have some kind of favoritism toward any product that produce highly satisfaction to us in any kind of form, such as design, color, the ecosystem, coolness, usefulness or simpleness.

We used to memorize the favorite brand, but we tend to forgot the technology behind that product. To some extent we don’t even want to know or come to our mind, who contribute or create the technology behind it? Haven’t you? Don’t feel bad though, that is just too normal for us as human.

Ever head of this guys called, Aaron Dietrich? Nope, some to you I guess. Ever heard of Microsoft? Yes. Ever heard of Windows 7? Yes, I use them, but why, does he invent it? Nope, this is not the guys that single handed creating Windows 7. But the works from Aaron and his team has leads to faster Windows 7 start or ‘boot’ as some of us more familiar with. He is the team lead that tasked to give Windows 7 start a boost.

Usually, the first things comes to mind about Windows operating system is sluggish, especially the start up time. Yes, damn slow to start after install it with may app or running for 2-4 years. There is joke that the first thing, you should do once come to the office, is turn on the Windows running computer and only then make some coffee, because making coffee is faster than Windows.

Aaronn Dietrich is featuring in Microsoft’s story titled The Man Behind the Windows 7′s Fast Start. I stumbled that story recently and found it quite interesting. It is an interview with this guy that cover variety of topic which included the roles, team work and Windows 7 itself.

So what made Windows 7 to start fast? According to Aaron “There were a couple of key features that allowed us to get better boot times. The first was we introduced what we call the fast boot feature, which allows some parts of boot to happen in the background while Windows is discovering and initializing devices. That helped us gain up to 25 percent of our boot time over Windows Vista, depending on the hardware.The other big one was that we significantly reduced the size of the operating system required to be read from disk in order to boot. Whereas Windows Vista required somewhere on the order of 220 to 240 megabytes of operating system code to boot, Windows 7 requires anywhere from 140 to 180 megabytes, depending on the configuration of the system”

The explanation made the feature sound simple but I believe it is hard to be implemented. Otherwise Vista is not such a disaster to Microsoft. You see, even the boot require 140 to 180 Mb amount of code, which is equivalent to 28-36 songs. Now I start to wonder, do they test Vista’s startup time before it was released? For Windows 7, what happen after additional software and hardware were added, does that grows the amount of code as well?

Gmail turns 5

Last Thursday, Gmail turn 5, a quite achievement for the Gmail team. Human at this old, has enrolled to kindergarten, started to learn letters and reading, mathematics and etc. Brilliant kids do much greater things, including solving complex mathematics for instance .

But Gmail is not human, although it was invented by human.. genius human being. It has changed how mailbox suppose to be, beyond its traditional function of sending and reading email. Gmail has transformed email to the extent, that it was like other not an email application, which is great. You can chat, create and manage task and many more. But it still not free from outage, which hurt millions of users.

Take all these as lesson to improve it further. Keep up all the good work!

If she can get it, she can keep it, that how the ads goes

I has caused a stir when it was aired on TV in the North America. You can guess why ,because this is just another never ending PC vs Mac commercial wars . We all know this is just commercial about the pricing war, but somehow, the human being is unpredictable. Someone goes another miles to dig who ‘Lauren’ is, which turn out an actress name Lauren De Long who lives in Los Angeles. I guess she never expect to be an instant hit like this, and on internet because of this commercial.

Although, she portrayed as geeks on the commercial, but you can judge the real person by her photos above. The commercial targeted only for North America, but who know there will be regional version later? And if you notice, this is only the first hunt for PC commercial, based on the ads title ‘Laptop Hunters #1 – Lauren‘

StatCounter’s Top Browser Statistic

The folks at StatCounter just release the statistic of how web browsers are performing for the period of July 08 to March 09. Internet Explorer continue its dominance with 63% market, drop 8% from 68%, while Mozilla Firefox gain 2% to 27%.

IE experience lowest ever percentage of Internet Explorer usage had in recent years, thanks to its own image. It has something to do with the bad perception that tech savvy internet users had, toward Microsoft and its product, including Internet Explorer which is slow, bug-happy and malware-magnet. The emergence of better and open source web browsers such as Firefox and Chrome also contributing to the loss when users are looking for more secure, openness and promote standardization web browser.

The new StatCounter Global Stat is useful for in depth view of the stat. It is flexible, as you can filter the statistic based on period and region as well as the statistic type as bar or line statistic. There is option for you to download the data in .CSV format, or turns the statistic to image (.JPG).

Please note, this stat built from the data collected ONLY from websites that running StatCounter script. Hence it didn’t provide overall pictures of how this web browsers are performing.

Asia

In verall, Asian countries still favor Internet Explorer over Mozilla Firefox with market share 74.72% to 20.79 respectively.

Malaysia

Unlike Asian statistic, Malaysian internet users are more favorable toward Mozilla Firefox compared IE with almost 36.61% to 59.13% market share respectively. For Firefox, this percentage is higher than Firefix global stat. The trend showing Mozilla Firefox is consistently capturing more percentage, while IE is consistently losing its market to Firefox and other rivals.

This prove that simple mobile technology is useful for other purpose too, including keeping your belonging safe .

The article didn’t mention which telco service he is using, but Maxis and Digi are curently offering these service.

As I watch this video repeatedly, I can feel how easy the world would be. Call it the future.. All systems, tools are handled with touch (and multi-touch) screen and surface. It can be found everywhere, from newspaper, Id card or even the flight ticket.

Ah, forget it, that’s just the dream!

Not really actually. At least that’s what how Microsoft vision the future on the their Microsoft Office Labs ‘s 2019.

Looking on the present trend, where touch screen technology is one of the must feature on devices such as smart phones and Microsoft very own Microsoft Surface, certain vision being showcased on the video is not that far away.

It still needs more touch up indeed, but as long as the ideas are properly crafted, nothing is impossible anymore.

Register Google App and set your email client on Gmail

I initially documented these steps for a friend of mine, but I decided to put on a more detailed, together with the screen shot and to post on Blogjer.

If you’re already a Google App user, you should be very familiar with these steps. Anyway, for those who are new to Google App, it is a platform for building and hosting web applications on Google Web Servers
(definition from Wikipedia). Among the applications offered are Gmail, Good Doc, Google Sites and etc.

In Google App, I’m interested most with Gmail, whereby I can use Gmail as my blog’s email client, meaning that all emails sent to my blog’s email address are accessible from there. Or in other words, I’m able to manage all my @blogjer.com email address in Gmail.

This is far more convenient, as compared to using default email client in CPanel, such as SquireMail. Furthermore, these emails are stored on Google Web Server, which is more reliable than our own web hosting server. I have now registered Google App account for my main websites. Here is how you can get started.

1. Head to Google App

3. By default, it will only show the trial version for Premier edition (not free). So click on ‘Standard Edition’ link (Free) to get free edition. But keep in mind that standard edition as it name says, has limited features as compared to Premier Edition.

4. Once you’ve decided to go for Standard Edition (after comparing the features), click on ‘Get Started’.

5. Key in your domain name

6. Fill in all required fields, and press ‘Next’ button

7. The next screen will will create the admin account. Fill up all fields and press Next button

8. Now you have completed the registration process. You’re required to verify the domain Ownership. Click on the ‘Verify domain ownership’ link.

9. You have 2 options here, either by uploading file or changing CNAME. I chose the uploading file method which is easier, and once done, click ‘Verify’ button. It will take approximately 24 hours before your domain is verified.

10. The registration process has completed. Now it is time to activate your email. From your dashboard (see step # 8), click on ‘Activate Email’. Depending on your hosting, choose the instruction accordingly.

11. Login to your cPanel account and follow the instructions on how to update your MX in cPanel. (Sometimes you may need to wait until your domain is verified by Google before you can proceed with this step)

Once done, your email should be accessible via this link.

12. Changing your email URL

The default email’s URL is not a beauty, you can customize it to be like ‘http://mail.yourwesbite.com’ . To achieve this, access the menu from service setting – email services. Click on ‘change URL’ and follow the instructions. Keep in mind that you must be able to modify your DNS setting. By default, this option is not available when you buy the domain, you have to register this add-on in which costs you USD1 annually (NetKL rate). That’s all, you’re done.

Yeay!! it is here finally. I’ve no idea when it’s been kicked off, but I’d seen the digiads aired on TV.

I wrote about MP last year, and it took almost 10 months to get materialized.

Who WINS? Absolutely us, the customer. Previously, we’re reluctant to switch telcos because we don’t want to change our number, that is the biggest obstacles if you’ve been using it for a long time. Worry no more. With MNP, you can choose whatever telco you desire and retain your number.

Interested? Find out more on this page – Maxis, Celcom, Digi. Of all 3 telcos, Celcom seems to be not really ready (or left behind) on the MNP, since some of the links are broken.

Digi and Maxis also appear to be on sponsored links on Google for MNP keyword, again where is Celcom (sad… I’m a celcom user)?? Perhaps the marketing method is different.
