Broadband Expansion: U Mobile Goes Johor Bharu, Digi Goes Ipoh & Kuching

Fast rewind to 2004, when I still lived at Kota Damansara with my uni friends, in one day we decide to subscribe to Streamyx (the only broadband available at that time) as we need more internet connection for email, research and games. To our disappointment the area we live is out of coverage. At that time, we live in middle cost apartment, opposite now Sri KDU school. Across the road is Tropicana, golf club and other high end residential house where Streamyx service has been there for years.

I still study at that time, and lived with our parent money as well as government fund. Not much but just enough to pay rent and pay meals. If you in our situation, what would you think? I personally think that Streamyx is being unfair to low income group! Doesn’t that  low income also deserve the internet connection?

Fast forward to 2010. I’ve been Streamyx user for 4 years now. My parent house which located 17km from nearest town does have Streamyx as well.  Streamyx has expanded almost everywhere in Malaysia, made it accessible to everyone. Thanks to competition…

Beside Streamyx, there are now other internet service providers competing with each other to win the customer. From wired internet broadband, wireless internet broadband to fibre optic broadband, we’re very lucky to have them now. Centered around Klang Valley as the first location to have the coverage, the services has gradually expanded to other major towns.

Celcom Broadband & Maxis Broadband alongside Streamyx are leading the pack. They have the widest coverage in internet broadband as far as I know, as they are also the pioneer.. Then there is P1 Wimax which is quite aggressive in getting their service roll out to customers.

Last week, U Mobile  has expanded their broadband coverage to Johor Bharu from very modest beginning. Same goes to Digi broadband which is now expanding to Ipoh and Kuching.

U-Mobile Broadband Packages

All of this is a good sign toward achieving greater internet penetration rate, which currently stood at 36%. At the same time, I do hope the same quality of service is offered regardless geography location. Imagine if only Streamyx tasked to execute this mammoth task? Do you think we’re at this level now? The old memory of Kota Damansara may happen again somewhere else.

Well, I plan to to write about U Mobile and Digi expansion initially, but somehow the old memory is coming back. As you see the post goes lengthy beyond the plan. Lastly, I’d like you to imagine again, how is the life without internet broadband?

Time Dotcom Launches Fibre Broadband Packages

If someone offer you sports car which cost you little bit more than your current national car, would you take it? I’m in for sure. The Time Dotcom’s newly launch broadband package called Time Fibre Broadband seems fit the bill by looking the high speed internet broadband it is offering.

Time Fibre Broadband which run on fibre optic network, is said to capable of providing high speed internet network up to 50Mbps in speed. There are 3 packages available right now, with the speed range from 2Mbps up to 10MBps with month subscription free as low as RM149 to RM329.

The biggest let down is the fibre optic network it self which is currently very limited to certain places only. At the moment, only Mont Kiara and it’s surrounding areas are covered with this service. This is going to disappoint many, but don’t worry as HSBB is just around the corner.

For more info, head to Time Fibre Broadband page.

HSBB Wholesale For Service Providers

Last week, TM has briefed industry players on the the High Speed Broadband(HSBB)’s wholesale terms and condition, which if you understand like me as end user, means the project is near completion and now open for wholesale ‘booking’.

Due to the fact that HSBB is government backed project, all telco and Internet Service Provide (ISP) companies as well as other content providers, should be able to enjoy the potential and huge bandwidth this project is offering as long as it is benefited the users and country as a whole.

The opening of this service to major service providers is equally important to bring the same level of competition, which could possibly lead to innovation and competitively priced services along the highly efficient services.

The HSBB’s ITC document can be obtained from this page.

Among important points in the news release.

  • The HSBB-A wholesale ports are priced between RM52 to RM55 per port depending on volume and contract duration and calculated to boost the ecosystem of value added service providers riding on the HSBB network.
  • The ports are open to access seekers that plan to offer at least dual-play services (e.g. data and video) to consumers. This is to protect consumers from service providers that only plan to resell bandwidth at a higher price without adding value to the network.
  • HSBB wholesale access services will be opened to access seekers concurrently with the HSBB consumer retail service launch later this quarter, in March 2010 in the following four areas – Bangsar, Shah Alam, Subang Jaya and Taman Tun Dr Ismail.

TM BRIEFS INDUSTRY PLAYERS ON WHOLESALE HIGH SPEED BROADBAND ACCESS TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Over 100 industry players and potential value added partners briefed on HSBB port prices, availability and rollout progress
Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) is today briefing over 100 industry players cum potential value added service providers on its Wholesale High Speed Broadband Access (HSBB-A) Indicative Terms and Conditions (ITC). The ITC document was made available to the industry for perusal earlier this month

The HSBB-A wholesale ports are being favourably and competitively priced for all access seekers (between RM52 to RM55 per port depending on volume and contract duration) and calculated to boost the ecosystem of value added service providers riding on the HSBB network.

Availability to access seekers is on a first-come-first-served basis. The ports are open to access seekers that plan to offer at least dual-play services (e.g. data and video) to consumers. This is to protect consumers from service providers that only plan to resell bandwidth at a higher price without adding value to the network.

Datuk Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa, Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of TM, said: “We are keeping to our promise of a level playing field and Open Access to all qualified seekers, and I would like to take this opportunity to encourage all qualified SKMM-licensed access seekers and value added service providers to become our partners. This is just the beginning of the era for HSBB. I want to also reiterate that TM is focused on quality of service delivery at all levels.”

HSBB wholesale access services will be opened to access seekers concurrently with the HSBB consumer retail service launch later this quarter, in March 2010 in the following four areas – Bangsar, Shah Alam, Subang Jaya and Taman Tun Dr Ismail.

Value-added service providers interested in the HSBB wholesale services can begin negotiations with TM then, and can launch their services soon after. For now, access seekers can download the ITC from TM’s website at www.tm.com.my for reference.

HSBB is an Open Access network that promises a level playing field offering a new world of opportunities via dual and triple-play services for consumers which will be further enhanced as value-adding content and application third-party providers and partners roll out their services together with TM.

IPTV, Video-on-Demand (VoD), voice and high bandwidth data services will be part of all TM consumer retail services subscriber packages, and TM fully expects competition and participation from wholesale value added partners to add more variety and choice to Malaysian consumers.

HSBB is a national infrastructure platform that supports nation building due to its potential to raise K-economy online activities to the next level. TM is committed to make it open to all qualified players and intends to work together with access seekers to ensure premium quality to customers.

Signed in September 2008, the RM11.3 billion national HSBB project is a Public-Private-Partnership agreement between TM and the Government of Malaysia to develop next generation high speed broadband infrastructure and services for the nation. By the end of 2012 – as agreed with the Government – approximately 1.3 million premises nationwide will have access to HSBB services. These nationwide areas, identified as Zone 1, include the Inner Klang Valley, Iskandar Malaysia, and key industrial sites around the nation.

TM is putting up RM8.9 billion while the Government is contributing RM2.4 billion on an incurred claims basis based on project milestones reached by TM.

TM’s total capital expenditure related to the HSBB project as of 31 December 2009 reached RM1.9 billion — covering last mile access, IP core deployment and capacity expansion for international links.

HSBB promises faster network access speed (port speed) in excess of the current fastest available Broadband for the General Public (BBGP) speeds of 4Mbps offered by TM’s existing Streamyx service. HSBB also targets superior end-to-end network performance, including international bandwidth.

More Details About Streamyx Cool Uni Pack

The launch of Streamyx Cool Uni Pack is surely bring an excitement to students who have anticipated for this since the announcement last year. I know, because I too get excited when I get my PC during my uni days.

As more information available, here is more detail about what is inside the package.

coolunipack More Details About Streamyx Cool Uni Pack

The  Streamyx 384 kbps included in this package usually cost RM20 permonth for 10 hours usage. Frankly speaking, this is simple insufficient, unless you use it simply for reading email.

Because this is wired broadband, I’m quite puzzle how students who stay in the hostel without telephone port can use this service? I was expecting wireless broadband instead of this initially, but you know, that’s going to escalate the cost further.

Netbook. By looking at the Intel Atom N450 processor, which is the most recent Intel Atom processor, I predict the netbook is going to be HP Mini 210. Retail price would be around RM1199 – RM1299.

Free Wifi Modem – Wifi Modem is the combination of modem and WiFi gateway to create a WiFi network, which means you don’t need any Wifi router to create your own network. This is good device. Because the netbook doesn’t come with modem, I guess this device will be used to connect to Streamyx, and the established internet connection will be used to share the internet and creating Wifi network.

Let’s calculate how this benefit you.

Let’s say your application was accepted. You’ll pay RM50 per month for 2 years, which bring the total to Rm1200.

Streamyx 384kbps cost RM20 permonth, and RM480 for 2 years.

Let say the netbook price is RM1200 (market price), which bring the grand total (streamyx + netbook)  to RM1680. Plus, each package comes with free wifi modem. You pay RM1200 for RM1680 worth of goods and services for duration of 2 years, without interest. This is one good deal!

Most likely the subsidy around RM480 per student will comes from Government.

However, due to the nature of the project which is a massive and large scale , it will involve hundred of thousands of unit, so the actual price of all components in this package is going to be lower than the projected amount above.

At the end of the day, with proper planning and execution, this is going to be a win win project to students, governments and the of course the vendors.

Unfortunately, students in public universities are not eligible to join this project. See the list of university. For FAQ, terms and condition, head to this page. So, what say you?
