police in facebook?

Apparently it is not only regular folks like us use Facebook. Do you know, that even police department has established their own group and developed Facebook application there.

I first came across about it when I stumbled upon news on how Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has created their own Facebook application for the purpose of combating crime. It’ll publish police news and at the same time to report appeal for information (through form) for any lead to unresolved crime.

Another police related Facebook application that I came across is, Toronto Police News release, which publishes police news around Toronto, Canada.

facebook vs crime police in facebook?

I have both Facebook applications installed in my Facebook to sneak in what is inside. Not bad, considering the high load task that policemen has, they have leveraged the latest craze on social media to spread their news and at the same time gathering back info from millions of Facebook’s users.

Other than that application, there are 7 police departments page available in Facebook, with the most fans to be Vancouver Police Department. However, it serves mostly for recruitment purpose and publishing police news.

There are a lot of groups and individuals in Facebook with the police on it’s name or profile, so it’s kinda hard to find the legitimate one.

This is the interesting part. How effective is crime prevention/investigation using Facebook? No one is sure about that, but I found one Facebook group called WANTED BY POLICE that has the group closed after the case is resolved. And there are articles on how Facebook solved crime (directly or indirectly) in Georgetown and London .

After all, this shows that social media website is not the only place to get socialized, get around with friends and have fun and etc. Depending on the creativity, there are a lot beneficial things that can be obtained there. My advice, use it wisely!

On unrelated development, GMP has its own channel on Youtube too. Their police department seems to be very active on social media. I’m wondering if our PDRM has the same intention too. And hopefully, it is not politically motivated.

Display Facebook updates in your wordpress dashboard

I’m currently on Facebook mood, so you might see Facebook related posts for the next couple of days in a row.

Luckily I now can open Facebook in my office. Otherwise this Facebook Dashboard Widget plugin would come in handy to view what your Facebook’s friends are doing

Basically it display the RSS feed of your friend’s notification, status update and posted items and display it on your WordPress’s dashboard.

You can copy and paste the feed links to your RSS reader as well to view the similar items, but this plugin is intended so you can view everything in one places (especially if you spend most of your time in your blog)

Installation

1. Download the plugin
2. Unzip facebook-dashboard-widget.zip
3. Upload the entire facebook-dashboard-widget folder to your plugins directory
4. Go to the Plugins page in your WordPress Administration area and click to ‘Activate’ the Facebook Dashboard Widget.
5. Setup your plugin accordingly by following steps provided on the setup menu

Open you dashboard, and you should be able to view it such as on the screen shot below

Do you facebook?

I know, Facebook is old story, but it is evergreen. It is so popular, and even Maxis has it in its ads (hehe, hope my sister won’t ask me what Facebook or Flickr is) . Ever since the ban of Facebook on our office’s internet network, my interest in Facebook has grown up but not to the level that I’m addicted to it. Actually, it’s not me alone, but some of my colleagues who has never used Facebook tried it out and seems like they’re more addicted than me. Haha

Why I Facebook
Why I think Facebook is good? I work remotely in KL while most of my team-mates and friends are located somewhere else. And not all of them has internet at home. So the only time we can communicate through Facebook and Twitter FOC is during and slightly after office hours (but we are still working ok) AND most importantly, when everyone is online. Is it fun when you get online but nobody is around?

Facebook at home?
I seldom sign in into my Facebook when I’m at home. And if I sign in, I won’t be there for so long. Unless you’re still single, when you’re at home, you’ll have plenty of things to do right? Your kids, your spouse and etc, all need attention from you. This blog needs my attention too, hehe.

Balance
As long as you can divide your time between your work and Facebook, I don’t see much problem here. In fact, Facebook has become a media or bridge that can get foreigners closer to each other. Not everyone of us is outspoken, but still, they can communicate through Facebook. Amazing isn’t it.

I know you’re addicted when you just join. You want to add as many friends as you want, and try out as many apps as you can. You’ll be under control within a week of using it.

More friends more fun?
I try to minimize as little as friends that I don’t recognize in real or offline world. For me, it’s not the number of friends that matters, but the ‘WHO IS HIM/HER’ matters most. But I do accept new friends that do not blatantly do promotions here and there. And 1 more thing, I don’t accept all ‘Facebook request’. It’s a lot!! But this shouldn’t be a big problem since Facebook now has Ignore All function built.

As usual, be friends with me. You’ll find some fellow bloggers in there. See you in facebook!!

Twitter guide for beginer

I have my Twitter account registered a few months back, but it’s only now that I started using it quite frequent. At that time, I’m not a big fan of any socializing tool, but 2008 has changed me a lot. With Web 2.0 wave growing stronger, I couldn’t afford to just let them slip through my finger anymore.

Ok, my interest on Twitter is back after reading Lorella’s post (one of my favourite bloggers) about Twitter. And my interest keeps getting stronger when I read an article about Twitter, which was the hot thing last year at SXSW, and again becomes another hot thing  this year. There must me something very special about it!! Ahh, but poor me, early comer but late user of Twitter.

Why is Twitter HAWT? There are a lot of reasons I believe. But in my humble opinion, there is no better answer rather than the ability to post, distribute and share the short message with mass audience in real time basis. Yeah, darn fast!!

Twitter for WordPress

There are bunches of Twitter related tools out there, (wtips has a long list of twitter tools for various usage), but I’d rather get used to it step by step starting with my blog. I choose Alex King plugin which appears on top of the Google SERP for keyword ‘twitter plugin’. As you can see, I put my twitter on top of my left sidebar for a better view.

My twitter indexed by Google

Apparently, Google has indexed my Twitter update that I had put on my left sidebar with the link pointed to homepage. Is this considered duplicate??

How to update twitter

There are many ways to update Twitter. You can for sure update it from its homepage, Twitter.com. I suppose I can update my Twitter from WP-admin menu, but it seems not working. So I leave that first until I have time to figure out what’s wrong with the setting.

Alternatively I use Google Talk. Just add twitter@twitter.com to your contact list, and shoot off an IM to it, which subsequently updates my twitter. But the new post won’t shows up on Blogjer.com’s left sidebar automatically,  I have to login into my WP-Admin to update it manually. This is 1 area that this plugin is lacking with (perhaps Alex has his own reason not to have this feature for the sake of performance). In my opinion, if it has this feature, this is simply the best Twitter plugin for WordPress

Twitter and Google talk banned in my office

Unfortunately Gmail, Google Talk and Twitter is inaccessible (filtered by firewall) in my office environment. So I couldn’t update and view Twitter frequently (the WordPress plugin unable to do so as well).

Update Twitter by email

This is how TwitterMail.com come in handly. With simple registration, you’ll get 1 unique email address. Send an e-mail to your TwitterMail address which will update your Twitter. The body of the message will be published in your Twitter Profile. Leave the subject-line empty for the normal message. TwitterMail is more than updating Twitter. Read the their cool features.

Twitter on mobile

I’ve tested few application before settled down with Cellity and Abiro Jitter, though Cellity has slight edge with more functionality. For a note, I’m using Sony Ericsson PE990i and WIFI as a method of connecting to Internet, please check your phone compatibility before installation. From the test from my mobile phone, my Twitter updated almost immediately. If I could get hold of my friend’s blackberry for testing, I hope I can provide more info what is the best Twitter client on Blackberry later

Twitter on Firefox.

It wasn’t complete guide without talking what you can do with Twitter from Firefox. I manage to test 2 add-on only which I feel best suit to beginner like me. I use Twitterbar to update Twitter from Firefox address bar. Spatielview has detail along with the screen shot how to install and use this Firefox addon.

And to view my Twitter on Firefox browser, I install Tweetbar which can be viewed an Firefox sidebar. Unfortunately, this 2 plugin doesn’t work in restricted internet environment such as my office though :~)

Follow my Twitter

As I mentioned earlier, I started using Twitter few months back, but I abandon it up until recently. I don’t even know that I have 5 folks follows my Twitter. Having said that, feel free to follow my twitter. There is nothing special following me, but you can be the first to know if there is new post from this blog and from my other blog that I’ll integrate into my Twitter account in near future.

Drop your Twitter link too in comment section, so I can sneak what you’re doing. You follow me, I follow you.

Malaysian Dotcom Youth Search ceremony part 2

This is the continuity of yesterday’s post. I decided not to go to PWTC, instead, I went to Alamanda Putrajaya for shopping and viewing of the new Proton Saga. It is indeed very nice, and if I’m not committing myself on my current car’s monthly installment, perhaps I’d be getting one for myself. Btw, I’m sorry for not providing much details about the event on yesterday post, I was there for only a short period of time, not much to be covered. And there is a lot of work to be completed in office yesterday, I was only able to view the pictures and write the post at around 1.30 am, sigh…

Well, part 2 is not that interesting too ;(, I can’t gather much information about the event on the net. Even, the official website also doesn’t provide such information. Walau-eh!!

The winner
First thing that you wanna know!!

The Malaysian Dotcom Youth Search Award

Most Popular Blog Award

Name : Paul Tan
Websites : PaulTan.org – Most of you have heard about his blog, all about cars
Alexa Rank : 11,454
Pagerank : 6

How is the winner chosen?

I’ve no idea on this, and it seems to be another unanswered question that only the organizer knows. It is definitely not based on popularity or traffic, otherwise Paul Tan who won the most popular blog would have easily won this contest. In fact, according to one of the moderators in eMenang, the winner does not even installed the script to get voted!!!!

So these are my assumptions:

1. The commercial value of his site and the possible unlocked value of the website and the partipant
2. How the same product can be developed further or on the collaboration that can be made with the winner
3. The entrepreneurship spirit and the age- he started at 21 if I’m not mistaken
4. The participant’s skill set – During the media conference the winner mentioned that he started coding this program by himself since studying in MMU.
5. The organizer’s future planning and agenda which suits with the winner-to-be

The event

YouthMalaysia is a lot more than this contest alone. There’s a lot more activities which you can find on theirĀ  outdated webpage. Dotcom Youth Search award is one of them, and there are others such as TafficJam, fashion, YouthStyle, futsal, graffiti, charity and etc.

The Organizer

joelneoh Malaysian Dotcom Youth Search ceremony part 2

YM is the brainchild of Joel Neoh, the winner of The Firm, which was aired on NTV7 last year. It was co-organized by MCA, Ministry of Youth Development, Rakan Muda and co-sponsored by gov and private agencies. Just imagine, the total prize is 300K, it is not cheap, so someone must be sponsoring this, if not, it must be coming from the gov.

The Goodies

We’ve got TM nut beg freebie containing gossips and entertainment (what the heck!!) magazines, pen, event’s pamphlet and a mouse pad. Btw, since I have 2 sets of this goodies, I decided to give it away to anyone who’s staying around Seri Kembangan or is working near Cyberjaya. First come first served. Contact me if you’re interested.
