Inside the Blackberry Curve 8520′s OS version 5.0

I have my Blackberry Curve 8520 running on OS version 5.0.0.31 , which leaked couple of weeks before. The first attempt installing leaked unofficial OS was successful and the device works with only few minor issue afterwards.
Always keep in mind that installing unofficial software update may cause the device to malfunction in worst scenario. RIM or your telco/carrier will not going to entertain you in case something goes wrong. So before you go for an upgrade, ensure that you have quite an understanding how the upgrading/downgrading process works, backup/restore data and etc. Look no further as you can find almost everything at crackberry.com.
I didn’t spot many new stuff in OS 5.0 although it might because of my weak observation . I try my best and here are the new thins that I can see on the OS V5.0.
Application Updater - I was greeted with Application Updater once the device rebooted. (anyone seen this before??)

SMS – Compose SMS menu has new user interface. You’ll’ be asked to select the contact before starting writing the content.
SMS content now shown in threaded conversation, sorted by the time when the messages were received and sent. As your cursor moved from one message to another, the time when message received or sent will be displayed just beside the contact’s avatar.
Replying SMS also become easier now with the new reply text box at the bottom of the threaded message.
As far as I can see, there is no major change on the OS update especially on the user interface GUI. What I notice is more blue colour on the icon and button when you move the trackpad cursor over it. Here are some screenshot.
And here is the new(left) VS old front screen. Notice the difference??
The internet browser also received minor face-lift.
Apart from that, there is some issue that you should take note if you decide to upgrade
- Blackberry App World – The app will be deleted. Because I live in the country where App World is still not available, I have to install is using workaround, but in this OS 5.0, the workaround no longer working.
- Seismic – Only work on WIFI connection, although ‘automatic’ connection was choosen. More toward compatibility I suppose.
- Application Center menu – All applications were gone. Not that big issue because you can download it directly or from App World (if you have)
- If you’re in the midst of listening to music, incoming SMS alert halted the music playback permanently.
- Internet browser – When the page is loading, pressing ‘G’ to switch to the search and URL menu does not working.

Hi..
I just updated my Curve 8900 to v5.0 just now. Update was successful.
The problem is my device can’t connect/register with BIS/Celcom.
How to solve this?
Thanks.
@Lee Try battery pull – shutdown your device, pull the battery as well as the sim card. And start it again. Or if you have batter pull app, use that app to reboot your device
Done, but still no success…
Celcom careline advice me to downgrade the OS.
And if after downgrade the problem stil persist he will lodge a report for network problem…
@Lee – Sorry to hear that. I use 8530 and upgrade is smooth.
Have you check the APN?
I need to de-register and re-register for celcom BB.. then problem solved
@Lee – Good to hear that. I learn something too today
I’m currently using 8520. Can I upgrade it to 5.0 too? & if there’s something wrong after I upgraded it, I can always downgraded it right?
@Tia – Yes, absolutely. Crackberry has very detail info about it
my phone keep on restarting everytime im making or received a call..i’ve downgraded and reset and change the OS..but still doesn’t work..also followed the procedure for a “nuked berry” in crackberry.com but nothing happen..i bought my bb curve 8320 secondhand..so im the 2nd user..is it got something to do with it??plzz help
@Hairi – First and foremost, what is you past and present OS? Curve 8320?? That’s quite old BB. It doesn’t matter if it is 2nd phone or brand new one, as long as the day you purchase it, it works fine. What do you do with the phone after you purchase it? Upgrade OS. Does it works fine before?
my OS is 4.2.2.184..it started since the first day i bought it from the first owner..it keeps on restarting but the owner said thats normal due to sim card changing..but after 3-4 days it still happen..i refer to the owner but he told me that it never happen before..so i decided to try to fix it myself..i went to a few websites google here n there..so i did the “nuked berry” procedure..i’ve install new OS and also wipe handheld..but the problem still there..really frustrated..plus im going to australia next week..dont really have time to repair it
Hi, I have the At&t curve 8520 and i want to download the software 5.0….can you please help me how to do it. thank you
Assalammu’alaikum.
i bought maxis BB Curve 8520 last week without any data plan. i wish to surf internet trough WiFi, but it seem impossible. i tried with Opera once, and it works. But then it become unavailable again. Any tweeks and tricks?
@Hanizwan -Waalaikumsalam. Please refer the last photos at this post. If you use default browser, always ensure the browser configuration is set to ‘Hotspot Browser’.
I think the same case for Opera as well, you should configure the connection to always ‘Hotspot Browser’.
i already tried with that setting. But, unfortunately, i cant. Have to search more deeper then. Thankhs dude
@Hanizwan, good luck
so if i buy a blackberry curve 8520 nopw will it be with the upgrade or without?
I’m planning to buy one, but I read a review on 8520′s display which is a bit disappointing it said. Is that true? and how’s the browsing experience on 8520,is it ok?
Please do give me some good points
I noticed you said something about the app world not available in your country, and you overcome it with workaround, and in OS 5 it no longer available. So it seems that after I’m buying this phone, I’ll be facing the same problem. So do you have any idea now to overcome that?
