Embed Flash file using Kimili Flash Embed plugin

Yesterday, I was on the look out for Flash plugin to display flash movie or file in WordPress. After trying couple of plugins, I’m settled down with Kimili Flash Embed which best suits my needs. You can get it directly from WordPress plugin menu (WordPress 2.7 and above), or download it here.

What I like most about this plugin is, the existence of Flash button on the post page (like below),  to easily add any Flash file to the post.

Just like image and movie icon that work to insert image or movie into the post, the Kimili Flash Embed icon works to find the Flash file that you wish to be displayed on your WordPress post.

The selection menu shown below, allow you to choose the Flash file and modify other setting, which then generate the code right inside the post. The code can be used anywhere you want in your blog such as your theme, sidebar or widget.

Alternatively, you can directly add any Flash using this syntax below, provided that you have already uploaded the Flash file prior that.

This plugin offers a lot of flexibility in order to display the Flash movie as you wish. There are a lot of options to choose from, but don’t worry too much if you think that’s too much.  The default setup is working fine (in this blog). The only thing you need to change is the location of the Flash file.

Read the configuration menu to learn more what each setting means. You might want view also what attributes it has.

The outcome can be viewed on the left sidebar of this blog.

New beta version of Google Chrome has been released, which is said to be speedier than the previous version. The physical appearance spot the new tab style as above and customizable theme (I use pencil sketch theme).

Internally, it got better Omnibox (the search bar) and  HTML 5. After you’ve installed beta version and you’d want to go back to a stable version, read my article posted before.

Looking for antivirus program in Bahasa Melayu: Try AVG Antivirus

I don’t know if there is other Antivirus program in Bahasa Melayu (Malay). It is human nature, that you’ll be glad of having something that you can relate to your root such as language in this case. Personally, I’m pleased when AVG introduce AVG anti virus with Malay language as one of the language option. This is rare icon smile Looking for antivirus program in Bahasa Melayu: Try AVG Antivirus

You know, I have lot of friends that does not speak or understand English (except for few words). Being a ‘kampung boy’ as well and being a computer seller before, I  know how inconvenient it would be using something that you don’t even understand. So this is such a ‘bonus’ to the users under this category.

OK, enough the rambling for now. To download it, head to AVG product page. There are free and paid version available to suit your needs. Once installation started, you’ll be greeted by message in Malay as well. Nice huh??

WordPress disappear from Opens Apps in Yahoo Mail

It is only this morning that I noticed WordPress is no longer available from Open Apps section in Yahoo Mail when I tried to open it to make some demo to one of my friends. This is how it looks like last January.

yahoo app Wordpress disappear from Opens Apps in Yahoo Mail

yahoo app

Not a big deal though, as it is still available via My Yahoo! Just feel a little bit disappointed because it is no longer there. When Open Apps is opened to public in January 2009, it does look promising, at least to me. The idea to let you do everything from within Yahoo Mail is cool idea, but the end result is far from satisfying.

Only few applications were introduced in the span of 6 months, which is not acceptable. There are 9 applications in Yahoo Mail, while My Yahoo has better number, with 24 applications. Numbers of app and app type tend to be the factor that influence users to use any ecosystem. The obvious example is how super successful iPhone App Store is with tens of thousands applications.

Taking numbers as the benchmark here, Open Apps certainly has failed to impress users.

Prevent hotlinking or bandwidth theft and alternatives storage

Hotlinking or ‘bandwidth theft’ has dried up my 100GB bandwidth every month for the last 3 months. I thought that I have some kind of ‘Digg Effect‘ or this blog has been up to the new level (pro level) … but I’m dead wrong. The statistic is still telling me the same number of page views and visitors (even decreasing due to no post for 2 months), so what’s wrong??

Honestly, I never suspected anything bad at the first place. The log didn’t help much because of repetetive error (that have yet to be fixed) from one of my websites that fill up the entire log file. Until 1 day when I came across one article about the bandwidth theft. It subsequently reminds me of what is the most popular article in this blog. Why?? Because the content has the image that will surely turn every eye on it.

Well.. it is quite a shame to me that the most popular article here is not about tech and gadget that I admire most, but about ‘beauty girl’ !!! Yeah, and that’s not even true (prank email) facts. Whatever.. Ok, I’m just guessting this post is the culprit (because the good photos it has), and immediately implement the technique to prevent hotlinking.

Like a magic spell, the bandwith usage drop drastically the next day. So my guess is right, someone is linking to my images directly, and it must be from popular websites, otherwise, it won’t take up so much bandwidth from me. So I have solved my problem.. phuhh.

How to avoid hotlinking?

I’m not going to tell you how to secure your images (and the hosting), but my intention is to remind how important it is to do so. There are thousands of websites out there that provide comprehensive guide about this. Just Google or Bing it ok? For a starter, I highly recommend you to read this article from atlab. It is my saviour!

One more thing, if you use cPanel (as your hosting admin menu), you should also secure it from directory browsing and indexing.

Managing images

Small size images are still being stored locally in the hosting, but I have started using Flickr as my image repository. The paid version ($27) lets you upload unlimited number of images and videos as well as allow you to create as many folders as you want to organize the photos.

If you have more budget, you might want to view what Amazon S3 has to offer. The rate is usually based on the usage. Read some of the guide.

Moral of the story, if you use image extensively (or not) in your websites, make sure that you secure it from preying ‘evil’ that is taking every single opportunity for their own good and profit.
