ASUS EeePC 1004DN: Netbook with DVD drive

1004dn 2 ASUS EeePC 1004DN: Netbook with DVD drive

One thing popped out into my mind when netbook being mentioned to me is, it is low end notebook without optical drive. But not anymore as the new ASUS EeePC 1004DN is equipped with DVD drive . I agree on the fact that optical drive is rarely being used, but on certain circumstances,  it is extremely useful to restore the system to order in case anything wrong happen to the OS.

These pictures should give you idea that this machine is truly beauty, stark contrast with the EeePC initial model. It is powered by 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280, 1GB RAM and 160GB hard disk. Other main features are including 1.3-megapixel webcam, 3 USB 2.0 ports, WiFi, Bluetooth, VGA outpu, 8-in-1 card reader and run on Win XP.

No further info available even on the Asus global site. So don’t expect this machine to be around that soon including here in Malaysia

This little tweak will show the number of Gmail’s unread emails on the browser title bar become even clearer. It’s there by default, but if you open too many tabs simultaneously, it won’t shows the number in complete. This is how the default Gmail browser title bar looks like. See how the number truncated to ’70…’

After Gmail Lab’s Title Tweak enabled,  the title changed from “Gmail – Inbox (20) – zakif@gmail.com” (above screen shot) to “Inbox (20) – zakif@gmail.com – Gmail (below screen shot)

To enable this, go to ‘Setting’ – ‘Lab’ – ‘Title Tweek’. Now you can view the number in complete.

Dell won’t be closing its manufacturing facility in Bukit Mertajam, Penang

The rumors about Dell to close its manufacturing facility in Bukit Minyak, Penang has been around for months. The facility will eventually be sold to a contract manufacturer from Taiwan which will then will be doing its  outsourcing work (manufacture the notebook and desktops) for Dell.

It appears that the rumors is untrue. Steve Felice, Dell Asia Pacific President on recent press conference related to Dell Q4 performance denied such rumors and at the same time said Dell will continue its present operation in Penang. Dell has 3 facilities in Malaysia, 2 in Penang and 1 in Cyberjaya. Altogether, total of Dell employees is about 5000 in Malaysia.

This news come as a relief for Dell employees especially during hard times like now. However with Dell having one of its worst perfomance ever, other cost cutting measures are still possible to affect them, which includes salary cut.
