Yahoo Widget Engine in Samsung LED TV 7000 series

First spot Yahoo Widget Engine on TV when it first appear on Sony Bravia 2009 Z-Series early January 2009. It doesn’t take long for Samsung to announced its own TV models , with Samsung LED TV 7000 series that offer similar functionality built inside during CES 2009.
I bet you’ll be curious on the first time seeing the photos below. Yep that is the Yahoo Widget Engine, shown on the left side of the screen.
The availability of Yahoo Widget on TV set is still limited, where only handful of TV models are equipped with this technology, beginning early this year. TV equipped with this widget usually come with premium price tag. The adoption of this widget is still in early stage, although I hope cheaper model will have this functionality as well.
Samsung LED TV comes with 4 default Yahoo Widget which are, Flickr, Yahoo News, Weather and Finance. It can be added or removed. Within two months Yahoo targeted to offer 20 to 30 widgets, and around 100 by the end of this year.
Imagine that you have something else running on your TV screen, side by side. And it is not static as you think. Depend on the what type of people they are, one will find it irritating and the other side saying otherwise. Not big deal as it can be hided. But if you can’t live with widget, this TV set is not for you.
But for someone that just can’t get enough of internet, this TV probably suitable for them. But be ready to parting away with $3000++. Find out more about Samsung LED TV 7000 series.

Remember seeing Yahoo demonstrate the widget technology a few years ago now, and wondering if it would ever actually make it into a commercial range of TVs – good to see that it has.
Still trying to decide though if it’s a genuinely useful function, or a bit of a gimmick to shift TVs. The Twitter widget sounds good, but not sure how easy it’d be to input text using the remote control – even if only 140 characters at a time!
