Ubuntu 8.10 hands-on – The beginning

It’s been a week after I start using Ubuntu. The installation was a breeze on my old Dell Latitude. Since I install it on top of Windows XP, the performance is quite disappointing to the point that I want to do full complete installation.But that means I have to create another partition on the hard disk and hence reinstall XP and the rest of applications, which I’m not yet ready to do at the moment
Overall, Ubuntu provide a better experience to first time user. It was a relief when Ubuntu manage to detect & install almost all Latitude drivers, so no headache here. Wireless setup is a straight forward too, and I manage connecting to internet which is one of primary objective that I set earlier.
Get things done
The biggest obstacle for anyone to start using and working in Ubuntu seriously is not because of Ubuntu itself. Ubuntu is pretty straight forward OS and quite easy to be mastered. But it is how to find replacement or similar applications that user used to have it in Windows, now to run it in Ubuntu. For instance, I’m using Paint.net, Snagit, Core FTP which are all Windows based application and now, I have to search similar application that can run on Ubuntu properly.
This is where you’re going to spend your time searching and testing it on Ubuntu. It need passion and patience to get this work as you wish. Otherwise, anytime this can turns you away especially those that just want to try.
Stay tune for more hands on.

the one and only reason why i’m so scared to switch to ubuntu yet. hehe.
pakcik dah hampir 1 tahun bertukar ke ubuntu (70% ubuntu 30% windows).. tapi kalau korang seorang gammers… ubuntu tak digalakkan.. walaupon ada winehq
Paint.net -> Gimp or Krita
Snagit -> screenshot capability is builtin, if you need something more advanced, maybe you’ll like gscrot
Coreftp -> Filezilla
thanks buddy!
Wow, you must be very experience Uncle G. I’m not gamers, but I do .net stuff on the XP side. Lots of components installed so I don’t want to mess it around.
Don’t scared. Ubuntu communities is more than happy to help you. Mine already got few alternative apps installed.
Is this version of Ubuntu free from the bugs of the last version totally? I hope so . I have to take a look.
