Dell Latitude E-Series with Celcom 3G wireless internet broadband

Celcom teams up with Dell to release another broadband-notebook bundle using the new Dell Latitude E-series. This is adding another choice of notebooks to its package, which at present only has HP Compaq. Unlike HP Compaq which is an ‘entry level’ notebook targeted to consumers, the new ‘business’ notebook will expand Dell’s product range towards small medium businesses.

According to the local news, the new Dell Latitude N-series will be equipped with Celcom built-in mobile broadband and Vodafone mobile connect built-in software. No technical details are available in Dell Malaysia or Celcom websites even though Celcom wireless external broadband modem is using Huawei technology,

As comparison, in the UK, where the wireless internet broadband is offered by Vodafone, it is using Dell Wireless 5520 Mobile Broadband(Tri-band HSDPA 3.6) Mini-Card.

The notebooks are priced from RM4,399 (not certain if installment payment via credit card is available), on which users are enjoying free unlimited wireless internet broadband for one month and a discounted rate of RM50 per month for the next six months.

Read While Waiting Project

Got to know this project via Bangsar Boy’s column in The Star. Out of curiosity, I checked the randomalphabets , the organizer’s website and thought this is a brilliant idea. Glad that someone came out with this idea, and forgive me for never heard of this project.

Before that, just to give you some fact, Malaysian children read 2 books a year (source the star. ) The same number of books are also read by Malaysian in average, based on the study conducted several years ago. I’m a bit wary if the number has changed now. Awful number, but that is the reality

As its name said, the background of Read While Waiting Project is to promote reading among commuters, while waiting, or on their way to get to the destination. The main target is commuters who commutes using public transport to start reading. It started here, in Malaysia, but the founder wishes that the success of this project can influence others to introduce this project in their native country.

Under this project , ‘book crossing‘ is one of the main initiatives. The concept is pretty simple, if let’s say you have unused books or mags, you leave it somewhere, where crowded people are, someone grabs the book and read it, and then left it again somewhere visible, and there goes the process repetitively.

Reading is not a ‘rocket science’ stuff. Anyone can, as long as the will is there. Once it becomes a habit, you’ll be glad that you have started earlier on.

The team has produced a series of videos (below is their first video) to better explain the concept behind it, which is available on Youtube. Well done folks and keep it up.

Wish that this small effort helps spread the words and subsequently encourage you to read more. You can do the same!!

Calling from 25,000 feet on MAS plane

Kent German of CNET have blogged from 25,000 feet before, but right here, you’ll be able to use cellphone & Blackberry from the same height!!

MAS had just released in-flight cellphone and blackberry services on selected route to oversees. Not too exciting for me personally, since I’m expecting it’d be something like this. No internet, but only cellphone service (call and texting SMS) as well as Blackberry service are available.

To achieve this, MAS’s boeing 777 plane is equipped with Aeromobile’s Inmarsat’s Swift64 satellite system, which is capable of offering GPRS and Blackberry services. As a starter, this is only available on selected routes to Europe, Australia, and across Asia including China and Japan.

MAS is the first airline in Asia to have such service on-board. Glad to know it, but I do wish the system is not digging deep into MAS’s pocket which could effect its earning. Ironically though, AeroMobile is a joint venture project between ARINC and Telenor, which, as we all know is DIGI’s parent company.

The certification from Malaysian Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) should clear your doubt about safety level of this tool.

But who really need to make a phone call or connect to internet during a flight?? If you’re ultra buzy or super geek, I bet you’ll need that, just like you’re in need of food.

Billing does not come with a small dime though. You’ll be charged with roaming rate according to your service provider. Do your own math before doing a phone call, and see if it’s worthy.

While the internet service is not available on MAS plane, CNET post above stated that the charges is based on the distance.

Not forgetting to mention that, the Virgin Americas plane have the Gogo in-flight Wi-Fi service to provide WIFI, but no cellphone service is being offered on the plane due to some regulations.

I still prefer internet than cellphone service. You can still communicate via internet with messenger and Skype. And internet offers more than just communication!!

Linkedin at a glance

Wanted to tell you all, that I’m now in Linkedin. What? Link Ink? Ling In? Another Facebook or MySpace wannabe my friend said..

No, it is not Facebook-like, where you spend your ‘free’ times with games and applications, or loads and tonnes of photos and waiting someone to leave comments. It’s still a social networking website… but in a way it is more professional. Or they call it professional networking. Wiki can help you understand more.

Why Linkedin?

In Linkedin, you create profile aka resume (personal particulars, educations, working experiences and etc). And start networking (like searching friends in Facebook) with others, get recommendations from your peers/colleagues, business partners and etc. Sounds familiar right..

Recommendation works like complements, where you get someone who has worked with you before to testify on your past performance, normally good one la

Just Like Facebook, there are groups that you can join in. Most of the groups are based on company or alumni.

But the cream of Linkedin is on their Job section. Apart from socializing and building networks, you have the opportunity to leverage your career at the same time. And that’s why you need ‘recommendations’, which build your credibility in the eyes on your peers or even job hunters. The more recommendations the better, as well as who’s the person providing the recommendation.

Not looking for jobs?

For your own good, every opportunities to create visibility on the net or offline, is a ‘necessity’. But, what is visibility?

Taken from dictionary.com, visibility is

degree of exposure to public notice

or the state of being visible

being constantly or frequently in the public view; conspicuous: a visible political position

In plain words, it is how people around you see you, know & recognize what you’re doing. To be visible professionally, you’ll need to have the right place. After all, Linkedin is where professional networking is, and it indeed suits this need.

Here, instead of you’re the one exploring for new opportunities, occasionally, it is good to ‘test the market’ via medium like Linkedin. Let ‘them’ find you.

Linkedin may not be as popular as it is in the US (It is ranked outside of top 100 website in Malaysia), and the jobs available for local market is quite limited. Perhaps it is time to give it a try. Who knows if it can change your life??

I actually wanted to blog about this, but decided to blog it in a different way. My profile. Feel free to connect with me.
