Bloggers, you are being monitored

Today, Malaysian bloggers community appeared on The Star and Yahoo News, for something that is not to be proud of. The message is clear. You’re being monitored, watch your word bloggers!! To whom the message is addressed is not very clear, but it seems that this is specially directed to bloggers who are writing something that’s against the government and/or government will, rumours, lies and etc.

The minister’s accusation against bloggers is quite outrageous. Yelling the warning in the news won’t make the situation better. In fact it is like pouring water into the burning fire. Why not taking a softer approach or a lower tone of voice. Maybe you think you’re talking to your officials, or perhaps students from a sport school.

While I agree on the monitoring of the internet activity could perhaps benefit our growth in internet related industry in a long run and fight the SCAM such as get rich quick spam, but I don’t agree on certain directions such as monitoring bloggers’ activities. The initial intention maybe to filter political related blog, but it could be expanded to wider categories and soon, perhaps bloggers will require to register their website. What the heck!

After all, we’re just a small and tiny group of citizens blogging to voice up our concern and dissatisfaction of what is going on. Anything wrong with that? As long as we’re within the limit, I don’t see why monitoring should be in place and nothing should be afraid of.

With polling days coming closer, more and more blogs are writing about the election, either with the intention of providing informative stuffs, persuasive and provocative or even solely to get traffic from the current search trend. So far I haven’t seen any political ads appearing on the net (or maybe restricted by SPR) but, there’s a couple of politic/election related videos available on Youtube.

To my fellow bloggers, I hope that you’ll soften your voice to avoid unnecessary action being taken against you such as summon or court action. It is not worth even a single cent, with everything not being on your side. Avoid attacking on personal issues, but attack on the corrupted policies. Provide facts to support your post. That’s all folks!!

This is what I fear most. Once the monitoring in place, it can be widen to anything they wanted. Perhaps it is time to move your hosting outside of M’sia

From the perspective of one of my friends who stays in oversea, Malaysia government seems to have negative perception to bloggers.

Perhaps they should specify “Politic bloggers” and not just “bloggers”. (That’s what niche marketing is all about)

There are many blogs that help people such as personal development blog, computer blogs, recipe blogs, sports blog … etc. I strongly believe that all these niches are healthy and beneficial to Malaysia.

just as long as its not the FBI watching me, ill be cool with that ;o

  5. zaki says:

Agree with you Raymond. They tend to generalize all bloggers to have the same habit. Blogger has bring millions or not billions as additional income to country, so blogger contribute to the country as well.

Or perhaps they just reading the notes provided by their assistants who overly state the reports

  6. zaki says:

LOL, if FBI watching me, I’ll stop blogging

  7. KNizam says:

    That might be the possibility

i hate it when a minister like her generalized. bloggers? why not specifically say political bloggers? or just let the mainstream media which blogs r she referring too, it will be much easier for the authorities to take action.

if she can say that, why not we generalized all Barisan Nasional politicians or specifically MCA politicians are sex addicts? CLS is one. he’s older but got a very wild side, what about the younger ones :)

  11. Aisyah says:

hmm… so much for free country. but look at the bright side, blog something controversial, get you place on the news. more traffic! LOL. err….they can’t ban your site, can they?

  12. zaki says:

I think yes, they can. But I’m not very sure.

    Oh no… We are being watched… :P

  14. Zul says:

Do you recall another minister asking, “Who reads blog?” Ha ha ha… A number of politicians, no matter how clever they appear to be, need to learn the real definition of a blogger, and the reality of blogging world. Maybe someone can give them free ebook - Idiot Guide to Blogging?

  15. Raymond says:

It’s a good indicator for us to measure their technology consciousness. It reflects their wisdom, don’t you think?

The idea of giving away the free ebook is fantastic. Hopefully they’ll love it.

  16. zaki says:

Hehe, I think I know. They’re controlling mainstream media, it is understandable why they’re against blog. Blog is accessible everywhere against TV which is accessible within the country and cable TV. But whatever their color are, I think it is time to kick start their campaign on the net

  17. zaki says:

No la, accept you’re posting something that against them.

But we’re just ‘ikan bilis’ compared to ‘ikan paus’ blogger

  18. shaz says:

Keep asking why and the answer will appear (but there’s no “pooof” sound ) :)
