Prepaid and debit card comparison in Malaysia

Finally it’s completed. This comparison covers almost all banks/financial institution in Malaysia except for a few banks due to limited info on their websites, product unavailability, and/or there was no reply to our email queries.
We admit that gathering this piece of info is not easy as we thought initially, but Alhamdulillah, we managed to get almost all info that we need in time. If you doubt how this info is gathered, this is the method that we had used. To ensure that the info is accurate, we didn’t refer to any other resources except:
1. Product official websites
2. Customer service contact through emailing/calling
3. Stores/booths selling the products
Prepaid card is the card which require you to load funds onto your card and use
that money to make purchases and get cash — you are not borrowing money
from a bank or other financial institution. The prepaid credit cards
look, feel and work like a credit card but are pre-funded “stored-value”
cards. This allows you to set spending limits for you or your kids -prepaidcardguide
Debit card‘s function is more similar to writing a cheque as the funds are withdrawn directly from either the cardholder’s bank account (often referred to as a check card), or from the remaining balance on a gift card.- wikipedia
Is debit/prepaid card for you?
Yes. There is actually a few reasons why you need either debit or prepaid card. You have been financially banned from central bank due to default in making payment in any credit services before, or secondly, you’re unable to control your spending habit, or, you’re a frequent traveler who doesn’t have credit cards due to reason 1 and/or 2.

Nearly everyone has had a financial emergency at some time in their life. Unfortunately some have no family or friends near to turn to. A payday loan can assist you in getting back on your feet by giving you a small loan.
Hi Zaki,
Thanks for the pdf and the effort. It was very much appreciated.
BTW, the second download link with the anchor text “download here” is not hyperlinked.
Raymond, thanks.. it should work now
regarding al-rajhi. i checked with them before and they said they will not charge anything regardless of the amount you hv in the account. however, i cant verify that since my account is only a few months old. and since all my paypal money is in there, it will always be > 200
Azwan, that could be true since you keep your balance > 200.
They’ll only charge you when your balance is < 200 every 6 months.
anyway, did you get this from their web site or from their brochure.
i did ask about this, but i’ll verify again. hv email them, will let you know
and regarding the 15 per card issuance, they didnt charge any
We email them actually. Looks like there is discrepancy info here. I’ll check it later ok
This looks to be different concept.I dont know how much it is working.
I need to know how to verify my paypal account. hehe
First of all, you need credit card or debit card.
Secondly, enter your credit card info requested into your paypal account. That’s all
Good information. This is an area that lots of people get confused about. I prefer the debit card to a pre-paid.

Does anyone know whether you can use your credit rating and score in Canada to get a credit card in Malaysia? My brother is going to Malaysia to study and he has a good credit he doesn’t want to start establishing credit in another country by getting prepaid card mentioned above. Another question is, is there any difference between secure credit card and prepaid? I mean the prepaid cards are secure credit cards. right?
Amago, prepaid and secure credit cards are similar but not the same and not used for the same purposes. With a prepaid credit card you load it up with cash and once it’s used up it’s gone. Essentially it is a debit card that can be used at spots that accept credit cards. Whereas secured credit cards are used because you’re trying to rebuild credit or have no credit history and no institution is willing to issue a card. As a result you put up a cash collateral and could only use it up to that amount. However, you must still make monthly payments like a regular credit card or face interest fees. So what would be best for your brother is to see if any bank offers a card that has low to no exchange fees while in Canada to use the card in Malaysia.
Thanks for your informative blog. I googled debit card Malaysia and your came up within the first few. However the link to the consumer guide comparison (ebook) does not work. I am a non-Malaysian and looking to get both a debit or prepaid credit card — one will have the advantage of more acceptance, but i want to have pincode security. Otherwise if lost anyone can use it! Being ‘ as good as cash’ is NOT always best!
@Hermes – Try MaybankCard. You can google that. It is combination of saving account with credit/debit card functionality. It does have pincode.
where is the file?
the link not working
@Samer – link updated. It’s quite outdated, as it was published last year
i wz wondering where to get a good prepaid internet debit card to buy stuff online in malaysia n how much it wud cost
Mr. Zaki….i hope you can feed my curiosity on this. I’d like to know which Prepaid card can be used to buy airline tickets for example AirAsia, pay for hotels, online shopping, paypal, etc.
Im just afraid that when i use it for payment, the card would be rejected for no reason and that will be so embarrassing.
@Amy, I think, as long as it is Visa or MasterCard prepaid card, it should be fine. I use PB debit card without any problem so far
Hi Mr. Zaki/Admin,
I got my MBB debit card bout 2 weeks ago. I’ve used the card to buy/book AirAsia, TuneHotels and some other hotels and ive got no problem with that except MAS Airlines didnt accept debit card (tried to buy one-way ticket to Langkawi which was RM160 nett). I believe they only accept credit card??? I checked my balance, it was more than RM600.00 but MAS still didnt wanna accept my card. Dont they have some kind of business link with Maybank regarding this debit card issue?
Kindly let me know, which bank offer prepaid debit card without the need to have an account.
Thanks,
tune money just closed my card for a reason that i cant believe…come visit my blog to read my story bout this crappy card..sigh
