Please consider the environment before printing this email

I hate to say it, but ONLY this post is best viewed in IE

This morning when I was doing my daily routine of reading and replying emails, there was 1 particular signature that really caught my eye. It’s about printing your emails. It is also an interesting signature by the way. Looks familiar?? I know you might have seen it somewhere before, but I still want to be part of the campaign, to contribute something to our environment.

P Please consider the environment before printing this e-mail

The tree icon you are referring to is not a pic – it’s a character out of a font called webdings which is a standard font on most computers. So as long as you can use rich text or html in your signatures you are fine.

emailgreen Please consider the environment before printing this email

Firefox seem unable to displays the tree (Capital P in font webding) correctly

Occasionally I do print out the whole long thread email from MS Outlook. You know it could be long, especially when it is of a long thread emails. It will have all signatures (some time fancy order), email addresses, and spaces between the emails. 2-3 emails could easliy took up 2 -3 pages. This signature also reminds you not to print useless emails or jokes from your colleagues for your kids or spouse icon smile Please consider the environment before printing this email Save them into your thumbdrive or show them through your computer enough la.

How to participate?

You can participate on this campaign easily. Just copy and paste them in your email/forum signature or on your favourite social networking website. (it’s not graphic, but font only). It looks simple, but imagine if at least all bloggers take part on do this, the impact will be great.

So what else can you do to be ‘green’?

  • Switch off your wireless network, your computer and other electrical devices when it is not in use. Save electricity and it will indirectly lessen the carbon emission from diesel power plant
  • No, do not throw away your broken or faulty electrical devices. Recycle them. HP and dell has their own recycle stations. For example, your notebook battery does contain hazardous stuffs
  • Reduce printing of dowloaded ebooks, do your studies online instead, whenever possible
  • Do not put your monitor on maximum brightness

Why do you need to be green? A lot

  • You and your kids will live a healthier life
  • Have a healthy longer earth life

So, are you going to be ‘green’ in the next few months? Copy and paste this into your signature.

Thanks for the reminder! I always try to read on the computer and not print things out. But, sometimes people just don’t think about it…most people want to conserve, so, having a little “reminder signature” is a good idea. Little things like this can make a big difference.

I never print my email. In fact, I prefer to keep them all in digital format rather than in physical format (easier for me to move house next time) :P

  5. zaki says:

Yeah, but sometime I still print it out to bring into meeting. But after this, I’ll copy the email into notepad and remove unnecessary things. Save more paper!!

  6. Aizat says:

every students in the world will need at least 7 big tree to fulfill the need of paper for him/her in school.

  7. Jessica says:

Can I just add it to my work email or do I need a special permission or something?

  8. Scott says:

I appreciate the fact that you are pushing this campaign, but you should also consider who you send this to. I work for a paper/forest company and I find that I like work and I need my job.

Perhaps we should consider who we are putting out of work before going green. Many going green campaigns are based on limited or unfounded data (does the plastic revolution ring any bells).

The enviromental push was needed to force companies like mine to become more managable with forest issues and they have complied and our forest are better than they have ever been.

My comments are not to generate debate, but to create an open mindness to the big picture.

  9. zaki says:

I welcome your comment here Scott. I’m a bit swamped recently, but I’ll try to do more research about plastic that you mention

    I need that logo

  11. Geri says:

How can I change the page setup so it prints more than half a page before page feeding?

Sometimes we do have to print email, or a web page and it infuriates me when 3 pages come out for a 1-paragraph email!

I understand how to cut and paste into text document and I also know how to “Preview” first and omit certain pages from printing, but what controls the default printing instructions?

  12. Psychic says:

Another way to conserve paper is to print on both sides of the page. I usually keep a stack of reusable paper on which I can print non-important documents. Once you get used to it, it works great and you would be surprised how much longer your paper will last.

  13. Printer says:

Not sure if its really a campaign, but I found info at thinkbeforeprinting.org with a how to guide.

  14. Pierre says:

I like to use these signatures:

Please consider the price of fish before printing this e-mail.

    or

Please consider the price of an ink cartridge before printing this e-mail.

    or

For everytime a tree gets knocked down, another two gets planted. So knock your self out, print this email.

  15. Hello Everybody,
Am I badly out of touch, or would other people also consider that even thinking about printing out email a mind-numbingly silly thing to do?

  16. David says:

Lately I have really cut down my printing, I think before I print something out, because there is no point in printing everything, I used to be that stupid person, but not any more!

  17. JohnV says:

Yeah, that is so pointless to print everything out, I read most of the stuff I receive from the computer screen and rarely print out something, and people should really think before printing out every piece of info they receive or find.

  18. Mohamed Jubir Dubai says:

Yes, i have send mail all to my friends to include in mail signature.

    Thanks

  20. Harald Walker says:

I just saw an email signature campaign with the opposite goal, claiming that printing an email is more environmental friendly than reading your email online. It wasn’t a April 1st joke.

  21. Admin says:

@Harald, ermm, make sense as well. they have their own point. Do you know if someone ever do comparison about that?

  22. Phil says:

For everytime a tree gets knocked down, another two gets planted. So knock your self out, print this email. <– two trees planted BUT more amount of chemical fertilizers exported and imported to Malaysia, its transportation emits carbon dioxide, etc..etc..etc.. we are enriching the fertilizer producer country.

  23. Willy says:

@Scott; You could edit it a bit. “Is the paper you’re printing this email on from a responsible vendor? Please see our environmental information at ” :D
