Malaysian Dotcom Youth Search 2008 spamming my email (indirectly)

If you’re one of the Dotcom Youth participants, by now, I believe you should have received emails and sms from them notifying about their upcoming event. But Dotcom Youth as a dot com organizer has done 1 big mistake. They’re putting participants emails’ on the ‘to’ recipient field, thus inviting a lot of spamming from spammers who are also some of the participants.

It seems that they are not aware of the consequences.

What I suggest next time.
1. Use mailing list/auto responder system, which will only list one email address on the ‘to’ recipient field
2. Use distribution list
3. Put recipient emails on BCC field

Further action.
1. Organizer must remove participants who do spamming
2. Other participants to mark that email as spam, to give them a lesson
3. Don’t visit their website - this looks like a small matter to some of you, but this is important for them to discontinue their spamming.

By the time I’m writing this blog, Joel Neoh the Project Director has sent an apology email about this mistake. But the damage has been done, our email has been under the hands of ’spammer’s, its already too late.

Btw, I just bought new web hosting for my another project. If you need web hosting, and are looking for a good web hosting company, there are a few good web hosting companies online that support Ecommerce websites and use a dedicated server.

I wonder how such company never use a proper autoresponder system. It pissed me off initially.

But then, it came to my mind that I can’t change the environment. I can’t only change the way I respond to it. (Which is by marking the spammer’s email as spam)

A simple BCC would save a lot of trouble. maybe they never received any spams before, they dont know what it is

Raymond : When I open my email this morning, whoaaaa, there are 70 +++ email. Dang. I can help but to mark them all as SPAM. Give em a lesson

Azwan : I don’t think they’re internet marketing. In fact the founder is the winner of ‘The Firm’ , this is basic thing that he should learn before jump into this

NoktahHitam : Hahaha, I don’t really mind actually, as long as I can get any traffic, but what I get now is SPAMMMMM

I believe that I can handle my list better than them.

I can’t believe that they use BCC all the time. I wonder such a company do not have their autoresponder system. Well, then I can consider mine as a MNC company. :)

Surely, they are still in the ‘youth’ category when it comes to spam ethic. Long way to learn.

  7. Joel says:

    Hey guys.

On behalf of the organizing committee I deeply apologize for the slip-up on our end. Our team got over-excited in the course of blasting out the emails. Apologies once again.

Anyway, good luck in the awards.

If you’re one of the email receipients, you’ll know how much emails that we’ve received. Can you take any action on this, such as delisting any particapant who’re spamming? Or send reminder to stop sending email, and those who’re doing so will be disqualified?

I’m mad initially, but luckily gmail has filter and report spam, they no longer flooding my email.

    They’re too ‘excited’, lousy excuse
