new blogger, where can you start to socialize?

You’re a new blogger, you have your blog up and running, you just have your first content posted, but then you’re stuck. You’re blur, you’re alone, and you feel scared.. Hahaha, don’t take it seriously. Ok, you want to try mingling around, but you have no idea how to start. When, where..

YouthSearch contest

Ok, there’s a shortcut however. I see that most of you have joined YouthSearch contest. So what is it? Borrowing the contest’s slogan, YouthSearch contest is The Hunt For Innovative, Commercially Viable Website. This contest will surely attract a huge number of reputable establish blogs and, with the eligibility to join the contest, and the attractive price offered which is RM 20K, this is not bad. So what the heck is this competition has to do with you.

1. Join the contest. If your application is approved, your site will appear on the main contest page together with other blogs. What are you getting?? Back link (sneaking on the page source, it shows they do ‘dofollow’), publicity and exposure to other contestants or voters who got to the contest page.

2. Assuming most of the blogs participating in this contest is a reputable and established blogs (at least compared to your new blog), you can easily browse each one of them, but don’t forget to leave a comment or at least say hi. There is a bunch of blogs out there, so you can either visit all (if you’re hardworking enough) or maybe filter them based on PR, Alexa rank, or topic. It is as easy as a,b,c.

Alternatively, you can also use CommentKahuna which I had browsed earlier to find suitable blogs to leave comments.

What is the best permalink structure for wordpress blog?

I’m reviewing this blog structure and setting to see if it is set up properly and SEO optimized. 2 areas that I’m looking at : what is the best structure for permalink and if it is good to place the contents in multiple categories. It began when I was reading SEOBook’s blogger’s guide to SEO. 1 thing that caught my attention was this 1 video on why you should place your contents into a single category. Please view the video created by graywolf and you’ll understand why. Basically it is about duplicate contents in the eye of search engine. I’ve been occasionally placing my contents on more than 1 categories, so moving forward I should (and you too) avoid it.

Another areas that I’ve been considering is how permalink should be structured. Permalink is one of the earliest setting that you must consider when you initially set up your blog. The default setup which is http://www.blogjer.com/?p=123 looks meaningless to most users.

Some blogs put in dates (it could be in whatever format and whether full date or not) + post title whereas some only put the post title. So which one is better in terms of SEO? Frankly speaking, I’m not sure which one. Initially, when I started blogging, I was using the one with only post title. But after some time, I changed them to have date + post title since I have a regular weekly post called what-interesting which covers on the interesting stuffs that I could find for that particular week, only which I have it discontinued. I plan to have the post title ‘What is interesting this week’ instead of ‘What is interesting this week Dec 27 2007′. The latter looks quite long and not so attractive. So, the idea is, since I have the date on my permalink, I can remove the date from my post title without the content being considered as a duplicate content by search engines due to the similar title posted each week.

I’m also doing spot checks on a couple of blogs in my RSS reader to see what their common practice is. The blogs are those of famous SEO blogs, official search engine blogs, famous earn income online blogs, tech blog and etc. This is done randomly and link love is only given to the blogs with their name different than their URL.

So, what do you think? Which one is more SOE friendly??

Towards a cashless society

School holidays, Eid-ul-Adha, and Christmas, all is now over and New Year is right in front of us. During this period, I believe, whether you’re single, married, with kids or whatsoever, you’d have spent quite a lot of your income (or future income) to celebrate those festives. Not to mention the expenditure for the preparation of your kids to enroll to a new school season as well.

What is your spending habit? Moderate? Lavish? Or really budget on each items?

In my statement on the first paragraph, I’ve mentioned about spending spree. Keeping track of what we spent on is a wise idea to not waste money in the oncoming shopping spree. There’s a few ways to do this, whether we keep the bills on the items that we spent on, and lump it together with listings on your credit/debit/prepaid cards. Next is to study them, whether we are spending on the unnecessary stuffs or otherwise, whether we had overspent on our credit cards, or whether we had had disappointed our loved ones of not buying some of the stuffs they desired whereas we have had the extra money to make them happy.. Okkk, if we’re on debit/prepaid card, we’d know if we do have that extra money to further spend our money on or not..

Have you heard about debit card or prepaid card? Nope, its not the mobile phone reload prepaid that we’re going to talk about in this article. This debit card or prepaid card work a little bit like credit card, that we can use a card while doing any shopping transaction. However, the principle behind it is not the same. Both debit card and prepaid card requires our own money to exist. It’s like we’re using our own money, but paying with a card instead of money, a move towards a cashless society. In addition to that, since we’re using our own money, we do not incur debt nor will there be any interest rates levied on overdue payments.

Can it be used anywhere anytime?
Many of the debit cards and prepaid cards partner with international retail electronic payment networks such as Visa and MasterCard. Thus, we can use them for online transactions as well as transactions with merchants around the world.

Any requirements?
Application requirements are much less strict than credit cards, since we’re not borrowing money from anyone. There’s no standard salary requirement for this. Almost anyone can apply for it.

What if the card is lost?
Don’t worry, the security works like credit card as well, we can make a phone call to the hot-line immediately to block the card from any further transactions. Thus, it is safe if we’re thinking to use the debit card or the prepaid card.

With these debit cards or prepaid cards, we’re being credit-less, that is we don’t have the tendency to overspend. This would be a beautiful solution for those who finds it difficult to control their spending desire, and at the same time, we’re going cashless. Another benefit on this is that we’d be able to track on the things we spent on, and we can try to limit them rationally. For my case, I’m not totally going on debit card for all my expenditures, and to keep a track would need me to keep all the bills and receipts which can be a messy thing.. But of course, with debit card or prepaid card, we wouldn’t be able to go beyond what we have or to purchase an item under interest-free installment payment plan. Another thing, reward points are typically non-existent or lower compared to credit cards.

So, come on and have a try on these and be cashless. Hehe, making it harder to thieves to steal our hard cold cash in a big amount ;)

sign up Live Search webmaster tools

I had just noticed that Microsoft has launched its own webmaster central tool last November.

I’m slightly behind in getting the latest update about Microsoft Live Search or Yahoo search due to the less ‘participation’ of this search engines in my websites :) . All 3 main search engines now has its own webmaster tool, even though they all have different tools and the functions. Google has a famous Google Webmaster Central and Yahoo with Yahooexplorer and Microsoft with Live Webmaster Central

Basic Functions

~adding sitemap
~validate robots.txt
~number of pages indexed
~search results against specific keywords.

Back to Live Webmaster Central, the features are basically less than Google Webmaster, but I can consider it better than Yahoo Site explorer. It also has a function to validate robots.txt file, but it seems to work differently from what was inside Google Webmaster. This format below is validated in Google Webmaster successfully but not here . I guess I need to read more about robots.txt standardization later.

Line #7: Disallow: /*?
Warning: MSNBOT doesn't support wildcard characters.

Line #3: User-agent: Mediapartners-Google*
Error: * and another agent can't be specified on the same line.

Adding website to this tool is simple, it works the same like Yahoo and Google’s tool. 1 important feature that is missing here is statistics. It should show at least which page is indexed, not only the number of pages indexed.

Overall

Google Webmaster is still leading Microsoft Live Search and Yahoo Search in terms of functionality offered inside. It is still a long way to go for Live Search Webmaster to catch up with Google Webmaster. Google Webmaster has its functionality added or enhanced from time to time, and hopefully Live Search Webmaster will follow Google’s step. I don’t see Yahoo Siteexplorer getting any enhancement or additional function on recent months.

Search Engine comparison

If you’re interested to know more about main search engines, Aaron of SEOBook has made a very interesting comparison on that.
